  • Thanks for the interesting numbers and analysis. One surprise for me: Leaving aside the extended market funds -- which each appear to be tracking a quite different collection of stocks -- the superiority of the zero funds is significantly greater than the advantage in expense ratio. Not sure why that is.

  • If you buy stocks, there's a risk they'll fall in price. Bonds are no different. Wouldn't it be sensible for bond investors to accept that reality, rather than tying themselves in knots trying to avoid all losses? Stocks investors don't do that. And if folks want to avoid all chance of a nominal loss, you're right, they should hold cash investments instead.

  • Interesting post, Ken. My father benefited from a generous, inflation-indexed pension, but didn't retire with nearly as much in savings as I have -- not even close. Still, I sense that he felt far more financially secure.

  • I understand why investors worry about the bond market: They expect bonds to be super-safe and hate the idea they'll lose any money. Think about 2022: The broad bond market lost 10% and folks freaked out. But is this sensible behavior? Or are worries about bond-market losses causing folks to lose sleep and pursue less-than-ideal strategies? I tilt heavily toward stocks while playing it safe with bonds. Like the broad stock market, I got taken to the cleaners in 2000-02 and 2007-09, down 50%-plus at the market low. In that context, why would I get bent out of shape over a 10% loss in the bond market? As with a 50% short-term loss in the stock market, shouldn't a 10% short-term loss in the bond market be seen as the price of doing business? Maybe the problem isn't bonds. Maybe the problem is our expectations.

  • The index's numbers seem to reflect the economic reality that the typical senior confronts. It doesn't appear to be a recommendation that folks should use to guide their retirement planning.

  • If you took out a securities-based loan, would you be at risk if the stock market plunges? Suppose we saw something like 2007-09, when the S&P 500 fell 57%. Could you face a margin call on the loan -- or is your portfolio large enough that there would still be plenty of equity? If you took out the securities-based loan, I wonder whether you might establish a home-equity line of credit right after the real-estate closing, and use that to repay part or all of the securities-based loan, so you're at less risk.

  • Forget sticks, like raising the age to claim Social Security. Instead, think of the tax carrots that could be used to encourage folks to stay in the workforce for longer and to encourage employers to retain older workers. Whatever the tax cost incurred with these policies would be more than offset by the additional tax revenue collected.

  • Agreed. Rather than reciting which taxes you'd raise or which benefits you'd cut to shore up Social Security, what I'd love to hear are the policies that readers would favor to encourage labor force participation. That's the solution to Social Security funding and so much else. More folks working means more taxes collected. But more fundamentally, you have more people producing the goods and services that society needs and wants.

Three Life Lessons

Michael Falk  |  Dec 18, 2019

IT WAS 1989 AND I WAS living at home with my parents after obtaining my finance degree. I still harbored dreams of playing professional baseball, but let’s just say I also embraced learning about the financial-planning trade.
A year later, my why—my purpose—was born. In 1990, my father’s employer went bankrupt. As my 59-year-old dad looked for a new job, I felt the stress level in the house rise. My mother didn’t understand why it took so long for him to find work,

TRADITIONAL OR ROTH retirement accounts? Below are eight key questions to ask. Your decision should be based on your answers to these eight questions—including the importance you put on each.

Do you want a tax break now? Assuming you qualify, a traditional IRA allows you to deduct your contributions, resulting in a lower taxable income for the year. Ditto for tax-deductible contributions to an employer’s 401(k) or 403(b) plan. But with Roth accounts, you don’t get this tax benefit.

Athos’s Retirees

Peter Minnium Jr.  |  Nov 28, 2019

TUCKED AWAY ON Greece’s rugged north Aegean coast lies a place seemingly frozen in time, where men lead simple lives, much the same as they have for the past 1,000 years. It’s a rocky, narrow peninsula covered in wooded valleys and terraced farms that comes to an abrupt end at a dramatic 6,000-foot peak—Mount Athos.
Here, the men live in strict, self-enforced isolation. No women have set foot on the peninsula for more than 1,000 years and even female animals are removed upon their discovery.

TAKING CARE OF AGING loved ones is almost always difficult. You’re worried about them and want them to be comfortable and happy. But they’re also concerned about you and what you’ll have to deal with after their death—settling their estate, funeral costs and the hassles involved.
As my grandmother approached the end of her life, we asked questions that I was initially afraid to ask. But it was the right thing to do: Answering those questions relieved stress for both my grandmother and my entire family.

MY GREAT-UNCLE, Jerry Kelly, was an American pilot in the Second World War. On Oct. 20, 1944, he was flying a close-support mission over Germany when his P-47 Thunderbolt was hit by anti-aircraft fire. After he radioed that he had smoke in the cockpit, his plane began losing altitude and was last seen disappearing into a cloud. Jerry was 20 years old.
More than 71 years later, a UPS carrier delivered a blue box to my home.

Drinks on Me

MONEY WAS ALWAYS tight when I was growing up. When my brother was age 10 and I was 12, my parents boosted our modest allowance. The difference almost doubled what we were getting—but there was a catch.
Our parents felt we drank too many sodas. It was the late ’80s, so I doubt the extra sugar was their concern. Rather, it was the extra items on the grocery receipts. We were inflating the family grocery bill with our beverage consumption.

IN THE RUNUP TO OUR marriage, everyone had advice for us—on everything from communication to sex to our finances. But some of the best advice we received came from a church leader my husband had known for years. He gave us a list of topics to discuss. These discussions resulted in some financials wins, while the conversations we avoided led to struggles.
Needs vs. wants. My husband and I each made a list of what we considered to be our needs and wants.

He commands attention and captivates audiences with his message. All good things. For both individuals and organizations, there’s immense value in asking, “What’s my why?”

Why would people waste their money and continue to pay for something that isn’t useful? Turns out, people aren’t. We’ve seen money flooding into lower cost, passively managed index funds.

A WAR IS RAGING. On one side of this conflict is the individual and, on the other, society and culture. To the victor goes your attention and your money.
I submit you’ll win through intentionality—and you’ll lose if you let society determine what’s of greatest value to you. I was on the losing side for many years.
As an undergraduate, I thought I wanted to be a lawyer. Why? Not because I had a deep passion for the law.

Four Thoughts

Jonathan Clements   |  Mar 1, 2025

WHEN I STARTED writing about personal finance in the late 1980s, my focus was on giving “actionable” money advice. Here, at the end of my career, I’m more interested in offering thoughts that’ll help folks with all areas of their life, financial and otherwise.
I’m not sure how many articles I have left in me. Fingers crossed, it’ll be many more than my current diagnosis suggests. But whatever the case, here are four thoughts that I’d like readers to remember:
1.

What’s It All About?

Jonathan Clements   |  Feb 22, 2025

WE’RE ALWAYS STRIVING—the next pay raise, the next consumer purchase, the next self-improvement goal. But to what end?
Our time on this earth is fleeting, our impact minimal and our legacy quickly forgotten. A decade after we’re gone, we might be remembered by family and close friends, but not by many others. And yet we keep pushing forward.
Does death’s approach shed any light on this curious behavior? Far from it. If anything,

Never Enough

Jonathan Clements   |  Feb 15, 2025

MANY FINANCIAL IDEAS are tough to embrace. But perhaps the toughest can be summed up in one simple word: enough.
Will we ever feel like we have enough and that we’ve accomplished enough? Accepting that we have enough and done enough might seem like worthy goals, a serene acceptance that’s possible for those at peace with themselves and the world around them. Indeed, for many, “retirement” and “enough” seem to be pretty much synonymous,

Taking It Personally

Jonathan Clements   |  Feb 8, 2025

WHICH FINANCIAL dangers should we focus on? The possibilities seem pretty much endless. In fact, five years ago, I decided to make a list—and ended up offering readers 50 shades of risk.
Yet our notion of risk used to be far more circumscribed.
In the late 1980s, when I started writing about personal finance, insurance was considered important, but it wasn’t much discussed. Instead, the only risk that seemed to merit serious analysis was investment risk,

Mind Over Money

Jonathan Clements   |  Feb 1, 2025

I LIKE TO THINK I’M rational in the way I spend my dollars, and I suspect most readers do, too.
We are, of course, deluding ourselves.
Spending is never simply about buying what we want or need. Instead, behind every dollar that leaves—or doesn’t leave—our wallet is a complex mental dance that reflects how we feel that day, the influence of others, how we want to be perceived, and our own financial history. We might declare that we’re using our money to buy happiness.

Taking Center Stage

Jonathan Clements   |  Jan 25, 2025

IT’S THE ONE ASSET we’re all born with, and it pretty much defines our financial life. I’m talking here about our human capital, our ability to pull in a paycheck.
That paycheck—or the lack thereof—drives our ability to save, service debt and take investment risk. It also dictates our insurance needs and how much emergency money we should hold. Put it all together, and our human capital should arguably determine how we manage our money over our lifetime.

Money Grows Up

Jonathan Clements   |  Jan 18, 2025

I MOVED FROM LONDON to New York City in 1986, when I was age 23. That’s when my financial education truly began.
I’d previously studied economics for three years and spent a year writing about the international financial markets for Euromoney magazine. Still, I knew almost nothing about investing, insurance, homeownership and other topics crucial to managing a household’s finances.
I’ve learned a ton since, and the focus of that education keeps changing,

Spending It

Jonathan Clements   |  Jan 11, 2025

RETIREES ENDLESSLY debate how best to draw down their retirement savings, and yet it all comes down to two simple rules: Don’t spend too much each year, and don’t sell stocks during down markets.
How do we put these two rules into action? Retirees can pick from a host of withdrawal strategies, including the five popular choices listed below. You’d likely fare just fine with any of the five strategies—but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t pick carefully.

Why We Struggle

Jonathan Clements   |  Jan 4, 2025

I’VE SPENT MUCH OF MY life trying to better understand the world, especially the financial world. But I wonder whether I should have spent more of that time trying to better understand myself.
Why do some financial situations scare us, while others leave us unperturbed? Why do we spend time and money in ways we later regret? Why do we find our bad habits so difficult to change? Why do we admire some folks,

Four Questions

Jonathan Clements   |  Dec 28, 2024

IT’S SEVEN MONTHS since I received my terminal diagnosis. Cancer is now the reality that looms over each day, and it’s been a rocky road, though the latest abdomen scan suggests I’ll be around for a while longer.
Where’s my head at? Here are four questions I’ve been asking myself—questions, I suspect, that might also be interesting to those who aren’t facing a terminal diagnosis.
1. Am I afraid of dying? No,
