Now. I’m 55 and still working, but if I lost my job tomorrow, we would be fine. In other words, we’re on the cusp of financial independence and that makes me happy. I’m doing things I couldn’t do when we were raising our family and living where I always wanted to live. And I now have grandkids to play with. ☺️
But over a lifetime not worrying about paying the bills, being able to send four children to college, funding 529 for grandchildren and living a dream retirement, I’d say money had a mighty big role.
What a fascinating question! My husband and I were just reminiscing about our early years of marriage, when we had very little spare money but lived on a canal that connected to the intracoastal waterway. We could put our canoe in the water and paddle out to islands with our English bulldog, who liked to chase crabs on the beach. We took picnics and camped on our favorite island. Money had a very small role, if any at all, in those days. We made enough to cover our basic living expenses and lived very frugally, and we were as happy as any two people on earth could be.

Enjoy those grandchildren when you are young, it gets harder as you bother get older – experience speaking.
At my happiest money was never a factor.

When my kids and grandkids have good news to share with us about their lives. Money had no role in it.
