Notice anything different? Today, the articles and “Second Look” sections disappeared from HumbleDollar’s homepage. What replaced them? You’ll find three new features.
First, at the top of the page, you’ll see a section called “Latest Posts” that includes nine Forum posts and articles. All new posts will appear here, along with other pieces—new and old—that are currently garnering comments.
Meanwhile, at the bottom of the homepage are two new “Spotlight” features. One section focuses on pieces devoted to one of 23 topics. Think investing, health care, estate planning and happiness. The other new section highlights pieces by one of HumbleDollar’s contributors. To appear, a contributor must have written a minimum 10 pieces, whether Forum posts, articles or blog posts. The more pieces a contributor has written, the more likely he or she is to appear. The two Spotlight features refresh every two hours.
Another change comes at the end of this week. Starting Saturday, Adam Grossman replaces me as the featured writer in our weekly newsletter. I’ll continue to write articles and Forum posts for as long as I’m able, but you’ll hear from me less often.
All this has been made necessary by my deteriorating health. It’s been a rough five months, filled with countless medical appointments, and my treatment plan is now in flux. I’ll have a medical update in the weeks ahead.
Among those who have posted to the site—whether you started a Forum thread or commented on someone else’s piece—you can see your earlier activity by clicking on your username. There, you should also find any articles and blog posts you’ve written for the site. Be warned: If you later choose to start commenting using a different username, this history will no longer appear under your username.
On your username page, you can create a bio for yourself. Many folks have already done so—and I’d encourage those who haven’t to join them.
Jonathan: so sorry to hear about the deteriorating health. I have been reading Humble Dollar since about 2020 and have learned a lot of valuable lessons from your articles and those of other writers. Regarding the new format of the site, I will miss the 2nd look section, as it regularly had items from before I found Humble Dollar. I do like the thematic approach and author focus spotlight sections.
Question: just a little while ago, I was reading in the Spotlight on Bernard an article in which he used quite a few puns regarding investments. When I was done reading it, I clicked the back button and found a completely different set of spotlight articles. I know you said the spotlight sections refresh with new material every 2 hours, but is that on a set schedule that is consistent from day to day? It seems to have refreshed today at about 9:50 central time. Just wondering about the refresh schedule. Thanks.
To be honest, I don’t know precisely when the refresh happens, only that it happens every two hours. Not sure who Bernard is. If you can tell me the right name, I can point you to a list of his or her articles.
Jonathan: my bad with the spelling. The writer I was reading was Michael l Berard, not the Bernard I mentioned. I can find his list of articles, so don’t need that from you. Thanks for your response to my question!
