we go to the same few restaurants and the same Casino Resort for vacation and have always tipped at least 30% which they remember so we have never had bad service or bad meal and the bellboys to our Casino Hostess, which we give a small gift each time , remember us and our time and money well spent………life is too short not to enjoy each minute good or bad but the good out weight the bad
Waitstaff are underpaid, often harried, and usually young–at least at the kind of restaurants I frequent. My starting minimum is 20%. I think of it this way: if the server were my own son or daughter, would I want restaurant patrons to leave a tip?
YEARS ago, at the beginning when I was seated and the server came to take a drink order while mulling over the menu, I used to ask them: Do you know what compensatory means? 99% looked at me dumbfounded. I then said do you know what compensate means….. I then used it in a sentence.: Your tip is compensatory based on the quality of service I receive. 🙂 I usually got better service. 😉
If I had ever had service so bad as to not want to leave a tip, I’d ask to speak to a manager to let them know what my experience was like. Maybe the server just had a difficult day or is having a tough time in life, and it crossed over into work that they couldn’t do without the money. Just not leaving a tip doesn’t fix the bad service situation. On typical to good service, I leave a tip from 15-20%. On ONE occasion, after receiving our beverages after 30 min, and after another 45 or so not getting the order, we just walked out. I called the restaurant the next day and let them know what had happened. It was busy, but not THAT busy to not even get our food. I think the order was never put in.
This is the wrong question-the answer to this is no. The question should be is it ok not to leave a tip at restaurant that is not full-service-for example, get a sandwich to go or sit down and eat-the answer to that is yes and it’s gotten completely out of control.
