"I have a bit of a philosophical issue with financial advice in general. My thinking runs along the same lines as restaurants. I'd never hand over sixty dollars for a steak I can cook just as well at home, with minimal fuss, for a fraction of the price. But that same sixty dollars for a perfectly executed Peking duck? No hesitation — because that's a dish that takes three days of preparation, a specialist oven, and a chef who's done it a thousand times. You're paying for something you can't replicate yourself. The hard part is figuring out if you're paying for steak or duck."

Resist the Urge to Act

BEFORE WE GET into it, a brief word. We lost Jonathan last year, and those of us who followed his work felt it more than we perhaps expected.  He had a saying that I always liked - that there are really only twenty stories in personal finance, and the financial industry spends most of its time telling them on repeat in slightly different hats. He was right, of course. He usually was. It struck me that a fitting tribute might be to take his core principles and do something with them, not quote him at length, but wrestle with the ideas in our own words, from our own lives. I've chosen "Resist the Urge to Act," and had a go below. If the idea appeals to any readers posting on the forum, I'd love to see others pick a principle, whichever one speaks to you, and write about it in your own voice. No need to be an economist. Just be honest. I suspect Jonathan would have approved of that approach more than most. There's a strange truth lurking at the heart of personal finance that nobody tells you about, possibly because it would put a large number of people out of work. The more urgently you feel you ought to do something with your investments, the more damage you will probably do by doing it. I find this deeply satisfying, not because I'm wise, far from it, but because it seems my instinct to do very little was correct all along. Vindication, when it arrives, should be savored. Jonathan Clements spent decades writing about money for the Wall Street Journal before founding HumbleDollar, which if you're reading this you already know, and if you don't, welcome, you've somehow stumbled into excellent company by accident. One of his core messages, boiled down to its purest form, was this: The secret to successful investing is to be comprehensively, almost aggressively boring. He had a list of principles, and one of them was deceptively simple: Resist the Urge to Act. I have a suspicion he knew it was one of the hardest ones, which is perhaps why he saved it for near the end of his various lists. Telling people to do nothing runs headlong into every instinct the modern world has carefully cultivated in them. The financial news industry has a business model, and it is not, I would suggest, your long-term wealth they're hoping to help. Their holy grail is your attention span, and attention without action doesn't keep the lights on. So urgency is manufactured. Alarm is engineered. The moment a headline about Federal Reserve policy or market volatility lands on your phone screen, the correct and sophisticated response, according to Jonathan, is to put the phone face-down and go and make a cup of tea. This is not what the headline wants you to do. The headline wants you to feel that failure to react immediately constitutes negligence. It doesn't. The information has already been digested, debated, and priced in by people who got it considerably earlier than you did. Acting on it now isn't smart. It's like arriving late to a party that ended an hour ago and wondering why nobody's offering you a stiff drink. Jonathan was a firm believer in market efficiency, the rather humbling idea that you, me, and most professional fund managers with their impressive offices and Bloomberg terminals, cannot reliably outthink the combined judgment of millions of other investors. Once you genuinely accept this, something might shift for you. You'll probably stop checking your portfolio three times before lunch. Which matters more than it might sound, because there's a fairly direct relationship between how often you look at your balance and how likely you are to do something regrettable with it. He had a line I've shamelessly adopted as my own: Your portfolio is like a bar of soap, and the more you handle it, the smaller it gets. My wife Suzie heard me say this recently and pointed out that I've never shown this level of restraint with actual soap. She's not wrong. But then again, I liberate hotel soap. The other temptation Jonathan warned against was treating the market as a hobby. There's a certain thrill, I understand, in hunting for the next great stock, the overheard tip, the sector everyone's talking about. The feeling that you've spotted something the rest of us turkeys have missed is a powerful one. He was fairly blunt on this point. If you want that kind of excitement, go to the cinema. Go to a casino. These are perfectly respectable venues for the willing suspension of rational judgment. Your brokerage account is not. The urge to act, dressed up as diligence and research, is still the urge to act. The actual solution is somewhat anticlimactic. Broad index funds, bought automatically and regularly, regardless of what the television talking heads are shouting about. When the market drops and the headlines turn an alarming shade of red, the correct response, the disciplined, intelligent, sophisticated response, is to turn the television off, close the laptop, and take yourself for a walk. Jonathan was clear on this point: Doing nothing, at the right moment, is one of the harder things an investor can do. It only looks like laziness from the outside. From the inside, when every instinct is screaming at you to move, to switch, to sell, to “do something,” holding still takes genuine effort. I have found, in my own modest experience, that retirement makes this philosophy considerably easier to live by. Urgency has a way of evaporating when you no longer have somewhere to be. The news cycle hums along without me. The market does whatever it decides to do. And I go for my walk. By strange coincidence, the halfway point often coincides with a bar serving decent Guinness. I consider this a stroke of luck. It seems I was a follower of Jonathan's advice for many years before I stumbled upon his name and writing. There's something to be said for arriving at the right answer through a combination of temperament and mild indifference. I'm choosing to call it wisdom. This piece was never meant to be anything more than one person's attempt to retell one of Jonathan's principles in his own words, a tribute of sorts, filtered through lived experience rather than expertise. The voice is mine, for better or worse. The wisdom, unambiguously, was his. There are more principles still sitting there, waiting. Each of them deserves exactly this kind of treatment, personal, honest, and a little bit imperfect. So, who's next? Because if there are no takers I'll have a pretty big task ahead of me.

AARP tax calculator changed to 2025

"2026 Update - While the AARP website tax calculator, as of today 4/14/2026, still has the 2025 tax calculator, the developer of that AARP software, Dinkytown, has recently posted their initial 2026 tax calculator to their website. I did note that the 2026 calculator appears to not yet deduct the 2026 limited charitable contributions in their calculation of taxable income (amount is listed, it just does not currently deduct from the total). The current 2026 version does use the 2026 brackets/rates and accounts properly for the $6K senior deduction for each age 65+ taxpayer on the projected return. It's anyone's guess if there will be additional 2026 tax law changes so I will not fine tune my tax planning until late in 2026."

My sister’s will and what it taught me.

"Amen. Both of my wife's parents died intestate. Her sister was able to resolve issues with both of their estates for their home and assets. However, her father owned property in a rural county 100 miles away. My wife and her 6 siblings each owned a share of 42 acres in that county. One of her brothers agreed to give his share to my wife. We hired a local RE attorney to handle this. It became a tangled web because of their dying intestate. It took a considerable amount of time and expense for our attorney to resolve this, costing more than the value of the timber land she inherited. Another lesson about dying intestate."

If 60-somethings ask me for advice, I advocate a phased retirement, seeking part-time work in their initial retirement years and, if they enjoy it, perhaps keeping it up into their 70s.
Yeah, I know, I sound like a real killjoy. My advice raises an obvious question: Is there ever a time when we should cut ourselves some slack and not have a job?

The Wages of Success

I worked and earned income from 1963 to 2022. I always saved a portion of my earnings. Some was “parked” in real estate, some in the stock market, some in bonds and some in a traditional savings account.
Every dollar I saved represented many hours of true labor. Some was as a business owner, some as an engineer, some was “sweat equity” in my homes and RVs, and some labor was expended by maintaining a commercial property.

Requiem for a CEO

A former CEO of my old company passed away this week at age 89. Of the half-dozen or so company CEOs that passed through during my tenure, Joe had made the biggest impression on me. Of course, I was way down the food chain so my interactions with him were limited.
My first encounter with him was as a newly hired engineer for the Philadelphia Electric Company. The company had a program in which engineers were exposed to different divisions of the company during their first year.

Factory Floor Education

I talked about my first paying job, at the local public library, in Learned From Less. I discussed experiences from my second job in Not Long Remembered. My third job, as a temporary factory worker, also made a big impression on me.
During the second part of the summer after my college freshman year, I signed up with a temporary employment agency. They would call me most weekday mornings to offer work assignments at pay slightly above minimum wage.

Mind the Gap

BACK IN 2002, I WAS part of a three-person financial analysis team at a major mortgage lender. I was better qualified than my two male colleagues, thanks to my master’s degree and greater years of experience. Imagine my surprise, then, when I compared my performance review with one of my colleagues. I discovered that, while we both received the same rating, he got a year-end bonus and I didn’t. Like many women, I was aware of the gender pay gap, but thought of it as an abstract idea. The bonus revelation was like a slap in the face. My manager and I discussed my salary in general, agreeing that I should be paid more, given my education and experience. But agreement isn’t action. Nothing was done. I felt trapped. Back then, I was a single mother and the family’s sole breadwinner. If I made an issue of my compensation, would I be seen as a troublemaker and would there be repercussions? Would I be better off starting over at another company—and would the situation be better elsewhere? I felt powerless, forced to wait for my compensation to be adjusted. It never happened. After a year and a half, I decided to look for another job and was fortunate to find an opening in a different department. Chances are, if you are a woman reading this, you’ve faced similar situations where you’ve felt discounted and yet trapped. It’s also likely that, as with me, it wasn’t a onetime event, but a scenario that repeated itself throughout your career. When you’re a woman, you automatically inherit social and financial disadvantages in our “equal” society. No matter how you slice and dice the data, the gender pay gap is real and persistent. Why Wait?

MY MOTHER-IN-LAW Doris passed away last year at age 90. In the last few years of her life, she often mentioned that she felt guilty spending any of her money, let alone splurging. She wanted to leave the money to her children, even when her children kept telling her to spend, splurge and enjoy the last few years of her life. Doris didn’t want to worry about her investments. Like a lot of people, she entrusted her money to a nationally known financial company. Unfortunately, the company, like many name-brand money managers, charged an asset under management (AUM) fee above 1%, which I considered high for investing her money in relatively simple index funds. Although she had a good portion invested in stocks, the return she received after the AUM fee was much lower than the return she could have enjoyed with index funds held at a low-fee company like Charles Schwab or Vanguard Group. Doris, however, didn’t want to think about it too much and just assumed that the big name meant best management. Result: Even though Doris thought she was saving money and doing the best for her children, she was unnecessarily wasting part of their inheritance by overpaying for money management. After going through my mother-in-law’s passing, and the accounting and disposition of her estate, I started to think about how my husband and I could best handle our estate. I wanted to avoid or minimize Doris’s two issues: being afraid to spend our retirement money and wasting the estate by having it held by a company with high fees. My Top Career Advice

THERE’S TRADITIONAL career advice, such as clarify your goals, master essential skills, promote yourself, network and work smarter, not harder—whatever that means. While this general advice is great, it’s no sure-fire formula. There’s no guarantee that if you work hard and smart, you’ll get a promotion and a pay raise. Traditional career advice tends to assume that you, your boss and the company are all behaving logically, and that the system reflects that logic. What if they aren’t? Believe me, I’ve been there. I had to advocate for myself and, after some struggle, I succeeded. New job entrants, including my sons, their peers and some friends, have asked me for career advice. Looking back over my work life, here are my top three recommendations: 1. Know what kind of manager you really have. Your manager is the person who can make or break your career. I am not talking about a bad boss who creates an overtly unhealthy or even toxic work environment. If you’re working for one of those, leave as soon as possible. No, I’m referring to the sneakier kind of boss. They’re nice people. Everyone likes them. They talk in terms of the team and compliment you in their evaluations. Despite the pats on the back, however, they just never seem to promote you, no matter how hard you work or how good your work is. I had my fair share of managers like this. Several years ago, one of these nice managers gave me excellent reviews. I asked him for a promotion to senior analyst because, for more than a year, I’d taken on senior-level responsibility. Resolved: New Journeys

WE RETIRED AND MOVED to Spain in 2018. We were excited and eager to explore our new home and a new culture. We traveled a lot, mostly in Spain, but also the rest of Europe and Asia. But since the pandemic started, our travel has been limited. Indeed, COVID-19 sped our return to Dallas. I’m happy that we’re now closer to our sons, and can see family and friends in person. But having lived in Dallas for 28 years, I already know the city well. Still, I plan to keep exploring—but this year I’ve resolved to take my retirement journey in two different directions. First, during the ultra-strict Spanish lockdown in early 2020, I discovered my love of drawing and painting, and even set up online art shops. Creating art has helped me deal with the stress of the pandemic and of my mother's situation. It has become my way of turning off the outside noise. This year, I’ve resolved to continue to draw and paint in my sketchbook every day. Whether that will translate into making more money isn’t important to me, though I’ll admit that I get excited and enjoy the extra validation that comes with selling a piece of art. My second journey for 2022 is returning to graduate school. Like my husband Jim, I was recently admitted to the Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies program at the University of Texas at Dallas. My focus will be gender studies and economics. Why? I spent my career in the male-dominated world of finance and banking, and I’ve written about my experiences and the challenges women face. I’ve also been interviewed about the gender pay gap. Fast Forward

HOLDING DOWN LIVING expenses is one part of the equation in achieving financial independence. But the other part is diligently and consistently saving and investing money. On that score, my husband Jim and I enjoyed four “lucky breaks” that accelerated our push for financial independence. Together, they helped catapult us into early retirement in just 15 years. 1. The Great Recession may have caused much short-term financial harm, but it also offered a great long-term opportunity. When the stock market crashed, we continued to max out our 401(k) and 403(b) plans, as well as contributing to 529 plans for our two boys’ college costs. We put these various accounts 100% into stock mutual funds, taking advantage of the lower share prices. In 2017, as we prepared to retire, I moved some money out of stocks and into bonds. I was stunned by how much we had earned. 2. During the Great Recession, I mentally prepared for the possibility that one of us would get laid off—most likely me, because I worked for a bank. That never happened. Both of us kept our jobs. Still, we strove to live as though we had just one income. When I got a raise or Jim earned extra from teaching summer school, we saved the money. We didn’t starve ourselves or skip family vacations. But we also didn’t pony up for a new car or new bathroom or new kitchen. 3. One of our sons received a full scholarship to one of the top public universities in Texas. That made college far less of a financial burden—and, as a result, both our boys were able to graduate from university with no debt. In fact, we even had some money left over in a 529 account. Courting Success

I JUST ATTENDED THE Madrid Open, a major clay court tennis tournament. It’s one of nine Masters series tournaments, ranked just below Grand Slams like Wimbledon and the U.S. Open. It was amazing to witness the players’ speed and agility at such close range. Because it was early in the tournament, most of the matches I saw were part of the first and second round, with top 10 players pitted against contenders outside of the top 100. Despite that, two of the matches went to a full three sets and were narrowly won by the top 10 players. They were exciting from beginning to end. There were many moments when we spectators sat at the edge of our seats, gasping in amazement at the incredible touch, power and athleticism of both players. Although the higher ranked player won each match, I observed that there was little to no difference in athletic ability between top 10 players and those just outside the top 100. Watching the matches, however, gave me a perspective on what it takes, beyond raw talent, to be at the top of one’s game—not just in tennis, but also in personal finance and even life more generally. The case for consistency. While one or two mistakes may not appear to make much difference, every little thing adds up. Top players rarely give anything away. Brilliant moves are impressive. But if they’re too often followed by a thoughtless error, an entire game can be lost. The same is true in life. We’re often not disciplined enough. But if we do the right thing consistently, even if it’s something small, we increase our chances of success—whether it’s reaching our retirement goal, becoming healthier, losing weight or having a happy family life.
