Jonathan founded HumbleDollar at year-end 2016. Earlier in his career, he spent almost 20 years at The Wall Street Journal, where he was the newspaper's personal finance columnist, and six years at Citigroup, where he was director of financial education for the bank's U.S. wealth management arm. Born in England and educated at Cambridge University, Jonathan now lives with his wife Elaine in Philadelphia, just a few blocks from his daughter, son-in-law and two grandsons. MOST MONEY conversations, especially with financial advisors, orbit around the concept of increasing dollars.
When is it best to buy stocks? Answer: in a down economy. Reallocate money from bonds.
When is it best to buy bonds? Answer: in a thriving economy. Reallocate money from stocks.
When is it best to save? The answer invariably seems to be: always.
On the one hand, I embrace this concept. A chronic self-tither,
WHEN MY SISTER graduated from physicians’ assistant school earlier this year, I gave her a journal, the pretty, unmarked, paper-substantive kind that every female loves. Inside, I wrote five things that I wish I’d known, or am glad I knew, when I got my bachelor’s in 2006. Here was the first:
I’m gonna call it self-tithing. Ya know: Basically, what Mom and Dad taught us to give to the church, I’m telling you to give to yourself.
I HAVE BOOKED eight one-way domestic flights this year, as well as multiple hotel nights—and I’ve done it all with the rewards points from my three Chase credit cards.
For those interested in earning rewards, you can’t go wrong with the dependable duo of Chase Sapphire Reserve and Chase Freedom Unlimited. Small business owners might also pick up Chase Ink Business Preferred.
The Chase Sapphire Reserve, the “premium” card of the trio, first made waves in August 2016 when it offered a 100,000-point signup bonus for those who spent $4,000 in the first three months.
SHORTLY BEFORE MY first child was born some two decades ago, I read a newspaper column urging parents to begin saving for college early in their children’s lives. Today, my son is not far from getting his bachelor’s degree in engineering, debt-free and (fingers crossed) with a bit in the bank for his master’s degree. My daughter starts college this fall and is on track for the same outcome.
I feel like we’ve been a real life middle-class experiment,
INVESTMENT contrarians are having a good year—but not a great one. In 2016, U.S. stocks outpaced foreign shares, smaller companies outperformed their bigger brethren and value stocks beat growth stocks. In 2017, all those roles have been reversed, with foreign shares, big-cap stocks and growth companies topping the performance charts.
For those of us who like to see the mighty fall and the downtrodden lifted up, this has been quite satisfying, except for one small issue: Even as the stock market’s leadership has changed,
YOU’VE PROBABLY already asked yourself this question: Is it better for my credit score to have just one credit card—or many?
There’s no magic number, because it isn’t really about how many credit cards you have. Rather, what matters is your financial situation and how you handle your cards. For example, if you are just beginning to build a credit history, it’s best to have a single card. Try to follow three rules:
Pay your bills on time—and avoid late payments at all costs.
MAKING SMART personal finance decisions involves lots of homework. Fortunately, there are plenty of great resources out there, both aspirational and practical, to help us figure out what to do. Here are my four favorite money blogs:
The Simple Dollar is my blog of choice when getting up to speed on practical money issues, like picking a savings account or insurance company. If you could only have one resource to help with your overall financial planning,
WHAT’S THE BIGGEST challenge facing investors? Forget politics, low interest rates or high stock market valuations. I would argue there’s an even bigger challenge: How do you find financial advisors who are worth their fee?
On offer are brokerage firms, insurance companies, banks, mutual funds, accountants and independent advisory firms, all of them employing charming people who would love to help you. Problem is, there isn’t a lot of uniformity in the products and services they offer,
IN 1934, WHEN I WAS age one, a federal income tax return was one page, and came with two pages of instructions. It was hand carried to the house by a live postman. The IRS regulations were 200 pages—though some say it was 400—all of which were memorized by the tax author J. K. Lasser.
When I was a young man in the workforce, we still got the several-page income tax form by mail,
I LIKE LEARNING from successful people. If you want to be good at something, why not hear from somebody who’s actually done it?
Back when it was first published, I read The Millionaire Next Door and became fascinated with these folks. Over the next couple of decades, I applied the book’s teachings and eventually reached millionaire status myself.
Along the way, I started writing about personal finance, combining my interest in millionaires with my passion for learning from experts.
WHILE TALKING recently to an estate-planning client about investments costs, she showed me a letter from her financial advisor stating that he charges her 1% of assets a year. Maureen didn’t understand that she also pays each mutual fund’s annual expenses, a portion of which is also paid to her advisor.
Her fund expense ratios average 1.14%, which includes a 0.25% 12b‑1 fee that her advisor pockets. Result: Maureen’s total cost is 2.14% a year,
AS A CHILD, I THOUGHT my father had a memory problem. He had a habit of repeating stories and sayings. It made me feel sad, until I figured out it was intentional. He didn’t believe in bells: School was never out.
“Make it a habit to keep and grow some of the money you make,” was one of Dad’s sayings. I was reminded of it recently, after reading that seven out of 10 Americans have less than $1,000 in their savings account—the sort of place you might turn if you have a financial emergency.
I’M ALWAYS ON the lookout for easy ways to improve my finances. Here are five simple strategies I use:
1. Open a high-yield savings account. The interest rate on a regular Bank of America savings account is 0.01%. Ally Bank, on the other hand, offers 1%, almost a full percentage point more. For a savings account with $10,000, that’s the difference between earning $1 a year and $100, and it takes just 15 minutes to set up.
WHERE DOES A TEEN turn for advice on money? I went to my late father. My conversations with him are burned into my memory like software on a computer.
“Do what you love and make it pay.” “Give your all enthusiastically.” “You can get whatever you want if you are willing to work for it.” “What you make is important, but what you do with what you make matters more.”
When I was 15,
LIKE MOST PARENTS, my wife and I spent time and money building a happy and balanced childhood for our four children. That encompassed things like vacations, cub scouts, church, music, and youth soccer and baseball. But it also included trying to pass along values like hard work, thrift, generosity and education. We never hesitated to speak about our finances around the dinner table, although we only shared specific numbers when the kids got older.

Come on, Dick. We just had an entire thread about the value of present value calculations in assessing Social Security and pensions. In that thread, you acknowledged being in the minority and being befuddled, and yet here you are again dismissing the whole notion, saying you "don’t know one person who ever considers" the present value of Social Security. Hmmm.

It sounds like your father was in the assisted living portion of a CCRC, not the independent living section. My mother is in the latter, has a full kitchen, comes and goes as she pleases, and staff don't have 24/7 access to her apartment.

When it comes to happiness, I agree that we're overly focused on money. It's an easy yardstick to latch on to, because it comes with such precision, and it gets over emphasized on social media and by corporate marketers. But to me, having money is mostly about avoiding unhappiness and being able to live life without fretting endlessly about financial issues.
