I’m on the cusp of turning 67. Since I’ll be spending my birthday in Slovenia, we went to NYC yesterday to have a picnic celebration with our older son and family on the Hudson in lower Manhattan. It was wonderful, with food, wine, and a delicious lemon meringue pie. We tossed the football and enjoyed the beautiful weather and setting. Later that evening we had dinner with our younger son and family at a marina-side restaurant, complete with Key Lime pie and candle. My 20-month old grandson surprised us by quietly singing Happy Birthday with the group – his first time singing it.
At one point during our afternoon picnic, my 11 year grandson stood up and offered a toast. He said some very nice things about me and my impact on him and our family. He then congratulated me on reaching 2/3 of a century! I was touched by his words, and impressed that he made the connection of my age to the century mark. I exclaimed, “I hope I make the next third of a century.”
I had read Ken Cutler’s excellent piece yesterday morning, so the concept of time was on my mind. In his post, Ken told the story of a math teacher explaining relative ages – how the younger we are, each year is a more significant fraction of our entire life. At 67, one year is only 1.5% of my entire life, But putting my age in context of a century was a nice counterpoint, and makes me hope there are many more happy and healthy years left! Any way, it feels good to be 0.666666667 of a centenarian.
Happy birthday and thanks for sharing your precious moments with us. Enjoy Slovenia.
Happy soon-to-be Birthday, Rick, and have fun in Slovenia!
Thanks Andrew. Slovenia is a beautiful place.
So nice to hear of your day spent with family. Thanks for sharing it with us—your words carried your feelings well.
Thanks for the kind words Edmund.
Happy birthday, Rick. But I must mention that your 2/3 century happened 4 months ago. I was recently thinking about this since my wife and I celebrated our 33rd wedding anniversary last month but our 1/3 century is in December.
Randy, thanks for the birthday wishes. I did think that a true 2/3 would be 66 and 8 months, but grandkids are allowed to round up.
Happy Birthday. My kids normally ask questions like “did you invent fire?”, “were you there to see the last dinosaur die?”, “how has the wheel impacted your life?”. I’m glad your family treated you well.
Thanks Jeff. I’ve gotten a few of those questions too!
Happy birthday and thanks for your many great contributions to HD!
Your celebration in NYC brought back fond memories from the 1990s of weekend walks from our loft in SoHo down to Battery Park City and the Marina.
Thanks for the kind words and birthday wishes. Our picnic was in Battery Park City. It was lovely.
Happy birthday! Enjoy Slovenia – lovely country.
Thanks Kathy. Looking forward to Bled.
Also Ljubljana! Just Slovenia? Plitvice in Croatia is amazing.
We have 3 days in Slovenia, then on to Croatia- including Pliitvice, Zagreb,
Split, Korcila, and Dubrovnik.
Make sure you drive the misty moutain meadows backroad from Lake Bled to Kranjska Gora and the superb alpine road from there through to Bovec and the Soca river valley.
Pula definitely worth a visit for the amphitheatre too (in fact all of the Istrian peninsula is interesting, ruby red soil, vineyards and olives)
You can even fit in Trieste as a bonus stop if going from Bovec to Istrian peninsula.
Sounds good!
Rick, happy birthday in advance! Nice to think of 67 as being a milestone other than simply Social Security full retirement age. Best wishes to you for many more healthy years as you work on that last .3333333333 lifespan needed to become a full-fledged centenarian. And many thanks for mentioning my piece from yesterday.
Thanks Ken.
You’ve had a wonderful life.
Thanks for sharing the celebrations with us.
I hope you have many, many more Happy Birthdays!!!
Thanks Winston
When I think of “the city”, picnics and waterfront dining at a marina aren’t the pictures I see in my brain; thanks for this new image. What a great day you had with your family. Happy 66th and enjoy your trip!
Thanks Dan. It was great.
The picnic was along the Hudson River in Lower Manhattan. NYC has done a great job with parks, especially along the rivers. There is an extensive walk, run, bike trail along the Hudson, with parks interspersed. They have turned many old piers into lovely parks. The one closest to my son has a great playground, sand volleyball courts, small soccer fields, miniature golf, and a surrounding walking path. It surprised me how many families live in the neighborhood.
The marina dinner was in Monmouth County, NJ along the Shrewsbury river. Eastern Monmouth County NJ has loads of great waterfront dining options – it was a great surprise bonus to us. Cheers
So nice to hear you sing the praises of my hometown (Queens, actually). NYC gets a lot of bad press, which is so unfortunate because it’s still such a great place. Driving across the GW bridge, my grandson has to listen to me say, every time “Will you look at that skyline! There’s nothing quite like it in the whole world!” Same thing when we’re crossing the VN to Brooklyn: “Look at all those container ships! What a great harbor! There’s the park with the cannon that your great grandmother got stuck in when she was a little girl and the Fire Department had to pull her out!” Ahhh sweet memories and family stories ! Have a great time in Slovenia!
Have a wonderful birthday, Rick. All good wishes to a thoroughly nice person.
Thanks Marjorie.
