A Taxing Situation

Following is a link to an article that I saw on CNN this evening. I don’t want to get political but it raises some interesting concerns.

I filed our taxes a couple of weeks ago and found out today that our refund has been approved by the IRS. I’ll be happy to see it in our account.

Another reason to try not to get a refund.

A link to a CNN article is a link to garbage. Pay attention to it at your peril.

“I don’t want to get political”…

But, did you mean too ? Because it is.

DOGE is a political organization pushing a political agenda. There is nobody working for DOGE who isn’t completely devoted to the Trump/Musk political faith. How DOGE plans to use this data has not been disclosed. The qualifications of these workers to properly interpret this data have not been disclosed.

That’s exactly what it is. Even more curious is that there are many proposals to spend the “savings” but none involve lowering the deficit.

Reads like a nice hit piece, many unsubstantiated claims and protection of an archaic system that needs to be updated to the 21st century.

We need to invest in outdated systems and the people who can use them to minimize errors and maximize efficiency. None of this is fraud, that is a buzz word for the uniformed.

Since Congress has starved the IRS of funds it’s not surprising the system is archaic.

Meanwhile, an unelected, former illegal immigrant, triple national and his minions have access to our tax returns and employment history. What’s the point of lengthy passwords and two-factor authentication now?

Do you realize how valuable that data is, aside from the major privacy issues? It can be used, without compensation, to further train and refine AI systems. It can be used for tailored propaganda – remember Cambridge Analytica? It can be profitably sold to advertisers – remember the pregnant Target shopper? And that’s just for starters.

Let’s not forget 19 year old “big balls” has access to our accounts

CNN does have a substantial number of viewers/readers that want to be angry about DOGE.

Why would anyone think they’ve been granted anything beyond read only access? If the IRS systems doesn’t have that function, why don’t they?

There is still something uncomfortable about the idea of unvetted kids with “read-only access” accessing our confidential data

I suspect that no-problem e-files will be processed just fine. Those needing the human touch… Not so much. The IRS was just beginning to recover from years of attrition and underfunding; remove resources and service will likely suffer. As for exposing sensitive identity data to an entity outside the IRS… Gee, what’s the worse that could happen?

The IRS will pay for free credit monitoring like other companies do?
