In this weekend’s Barron’s, Jack Hough wrote that ‘…. shoppers say they’ll spend an average of $259.04 per person on Mother’s Day this year, up exactly $5 from last …”
Sadly, my mother died several years ago. But my wife and I have two children, and they are getting her a gift. However, I can promise you that total the pair spend on their mother won’t begin to approach $520+.
Does the average shopper really spend an average of $260 per person for their mother? Not that mothers don’t deserve it. I always told my mom and dad that no matter what I did for them, I could never fully repay them for what they did for me.
$259 sounds like a lot to me. Our mothers and Spouse’s stepmom are all still alive. We just sent cards this year. Some years we send gifts, but they are modest. Agree with what Jonathan said about going out for a meal. If we took them all out it would be that much. Chris
The influence of a mother on the lives of her children is incalculable. Forget the spending categories. Thank your mom often for everything. Especially her unconditional love.
Like you, my Mom died more than several years ago. I’m no longer married to the mother of my children. I am now married to a woman who is a great Mom to her kids and a loving Nana to both her and my grandchildren. She’s getting a Hallmark card from me.
I know flowers and Hallmark cards are ridiculously expensive. But does the $259 perhaps include a meal out?
It appears as the spending categories are all-encompassing. Cards, flowers, outings, jewelry, electronics, etc. Maybe some mom is getting a yacht and that drives up the average spend.
Guess your going to have to research what the median and mean values are.
