re RDQ’s “down arrows” —> My 1 cent :

Rather than being lost in the middle of a prior post, I thought I would put this more front and center given:

1) it  currently has 7 down votes

2) which prove my point

3) Thanks to David Lancaster for your comment, included below, for what seems to be a “courageous  act” on your part !

Why is there “voting” on peoples comments ? If you have a comment, either positive or negative, post it. Otherwise, keep it to yourself if you don’t have the intestinal fortitude to post it publicly.

Is this Facebook or Instragram ? Are we posting to get “Likes” ?
It is childish and beneath the dignity of this blog site. Are we not adults here ? The ability to vote on comments should be removed.

Despite your down votes, I agree 100%. This site seems to be headed in the wrong direction. This site is the closest I get to social media. I have always enjoyed the comments, and the fact that, whether I agree with them or not, they are directed at the topic, not an attack on the writer’s personality.
I keep away from social media because it has become the cesspool of the internet. I truly hope that this site does not become one that I feel I can no longer feel comfortable interacting with due to the tenor of the commenting, and increasing number of down votes for innocuous comments on certain writers’ posts that seem like they are negative just because of who they are.

I don’t down vote, I wouldn’t change things.

The up and down votes just don’t mean all that much to me. If you have something interesting to say you’re usually gonna get both.

I’m confused. You are listed as the author of this piece.

Maybe you broke the system with your record breaking number of down votes 😂

If I was a teenager, a plethora of downvotes on a comment or post I created would have been a big deal, adding to all the insecurities of that stage of life. As an adult, with a lifetime of experience, I can say that my feathers aren’t going to be ruffled. If anything, it provides feedback on how in sync my thoughts are with the site’s orthodoxy. As an article contributor I find the arrows a positive feature. Not everyone has the confidence or wish to post a comment, why should their feelings be excluded. If I may be blunt. It’s a system that values the feeling of the collective over the ego of the individual poster like myself.

Feedback is good and i welcome it as it’s a main reason I write, but with just an arrow you have no idea of what the feedback is. What’s liked or not, agreed with or not or just a poor subject?

I totally agree that feedback from comments is the ideal way to gauge an article’s reception. However, in any online forum, the majority of people are “silent consumers,” meaning they read content without commenting. While using up or down arrows is a poor substitute for detailed comments, it still provides some sense of how an article is being received and is better than no feedback at all.

If someone downvotes an article or comment, it is of zero value to me, unless they include a comment as to why. In fact, I have never given anyone a down vote, not that I haven’t seen a few with which I don’t agree. I either click “thumbs up”, or no click.

I agree. The down votes for some posts seem more about the poster than the topic. Let’s eliminate up/down votes and focus on the subject of the post. This should not be a popularity contest.

I agree! I’ve never understood the point of up/down voting.
