Parkslope, I promise no outsized losses to admit to. My worst individual stock was Verizon. The share price has declined. The dividends bring the total return to ALMOST break even. But the opportunity cost is there too. To make this an even more blurry answer, I have been investing the VZ dividends into other funds. I can't begin to calculate everything. Safe to say it hasn't been a winner.

Many Bogleheads get a little too ridged in their thinking. Bogle developed a winning strategy for sure. But anytime investors proclaim there is one and only one way to invest, it is an oversimplification. I think of myself as 70% Bogle compatible. I've reaped outsized reward when I've strayed into individual stocks. Apple and Microsoft at the top of the list.

I'm late to comment, but I nominate this as the best HD post ever. I hope it gets reposted far and wide.

Does 59 count as FIRE? I don't have a YouTube channel to sell anything. Agreed that people claiming to be retired before their 50's are most likely working at selling the dream of FIRE.

I've filled out several online life expectancy calculators. The consensus is that I will go around age 87. I discarded the results of one that says I'll pass next Wednesday at Noon. I will likely keep a portion of my portfolio in growth stocks till I checkout.

I need to update my final instructions. The old paperwork specifies who gets my 8-track tapes. I'm not afraid of dying. I just don't want to be there when it happens. Woody

Highly detailed planning is great. For those who plan less, the estate lawyer, armed with a death certificate, can usually access all accounts.

Claiming to have limited gray matter and having a bachelor's degree in math.... doesn't add up.
