I press 2 small pieces of soap to become a not quite new but bigger one. DH hates it.
Empty backsides of paper get used to print recipes or other not so important texts, used envelopes become shopping lists
I do the sock thing and if the hole is not too complicated I even darn it.
I just do not want to contribute to the landfill more than necessary.
Dear gnussen, my Dad had to take a similar hit at a similar age. At that time it was quite unusual. Fortunately my parents could stretch the money till social security and pensions kicked in and had enough to live well. However, his pride was hurt enormously and even years after he could never really enjoy retirement. So please take care of your mental coping strategies, use a consultant and any help that is out there.
I hope that you can team up with your wife.
If you are lucky it might be a blessing in disguise!
