Despite my recent Ozempic nightmare and near suicide (see my article “My Ozempic Nightmare“) I’ve decided to go ahead with my Ironman Ottawa attempt this August at age 70.
I don’t want to live with the regret of not trying although physically I still have a long way to go. I lost a lot of muscle while on the drug and my energy levels are still low but I need to give it a shot as I consider it unfinished business.
To make my Ironman attempt even more special I’m dedicating the race to our own Jonathan Clements. A former marathoner and current biker I thought he would be amused following my progress during the race.
Jonathan is a real Ironman if you ask me.
Running is a great antidepressant. Enjoy as long as physically able
Go for it!!
That’s the plan!
Best of luck! When I was in my 40’s I ran sprint triathlons. Never even considered a full IronMan. I like the dedication – both yours and the idea of including Jonathan in your motivation.
I think having JC on my shoulder will help get me through the rough patches. It’s not about me it’s about us!
Wishing you the best!
Thank you! I know it’s going to be hard but I think it will be fun as well.
Mike, glad you’re on the mend and good on you for racing in Jonathan’s honor.
Best of luck!
Thank you. Everyone needs a reason to do something hard and I have a good reason.
Mike, before trying an IronMan you should check that you didn’t damage your heart when you lost a lot of muscle.
Good point! I’m going for a brain MRI tomorrow and will talk to them about it.
Give it hell Mike. I’m proud to know you, even if only virtually.
Thank you Dan and yes that’s the plan!
Great to hear this, Mike. I’m glad you are doing much better after your Ozempic scare…your article on that ordeal was quite harrowing. Now, move forward and make Jonathan proud in August!
Thanks Ken. I had a special jersey made with Jonathan’s initials on the sleeve. If you want to see it and follow my wellness journey follow me on Instagram @retirement_rebel. I’m not sure how things will turn out but I’m going to give it everything I got!
