Whether in marriage, music, business, etc., it seems as though an astute , hard working and loyal partner, or in many cases, partners, thousands of versions and the like. will enhance the marriage, boost record sales and popularity, and make virtually any business better and more profitable.
Buffett said the late Charlie Munger was the architect of Berkshire, and the” abdominal no man”, while Warren Buffet was mostly in charge of executing the decisions , and so forth. They never argued, even when Munger would “nay”, some plans of Buffett’s.
They would share their ideas and having two heads instead of one, I would guess, added a lot of value to the company.
Lennon and Mc Cartney were the two most successful song writers in history, and each would share ideas , as a result, dozens of songs were improved by the input of both. Also, each wanted to outdo the other, and they strived to compete with each other. Paul and John needed the other far more than they would ever care to admit.
The proof is that ,with only a few exceptions, nothing either did as solo artists ,or with The Plastic Ono Band or Wings, was competative to The Beatles music. ” Maybe I’m Amazed”, “Imagine ” , were as good, but they are few are far between.
On many songs, like probably their greatest song, ” A Day In The Life,” one guy, in this case Lennon, wrote and sang the main parts, while the other wrote and sang the ” Middle Eight.” ” Lennon sang, ” I read the news today ,oh boy..” and Paul sang, ” Woke up, fell out of bed…”, and that collaboration enhances the song so much.
On,” I’ve got a feeling,’, it was the opposite, Paul sang ” I’ve got a feeling, a feeling deep inside…”, and John, ” Everybody had a hard year,..”.
After The Beatles broke up, and no, it was not Yoko’s doing, Paul made several solo albums. He played all of the instruments, guitar, bass guitar, keyboards, percussion, as well as lead and backing vocals. Sometimes his late wife Linda would do some backing vocals and keyboards, but it was mainly Paul.
The Beatles also had a pretty fair lead guitar player, songwriter and singer, George Harrison. He added even more competition, and his songs are some of the Beatles best, including, ” Something” and “Here Comes The Sun.” Ringo was the perfect drummer for that group, not flashy, but a fine drummer. And the late Quincy Jones is entitled to his opinion, but, The Beatles were not ” The worst musicians, ever.”
The sky high-talent level of the ” Four Lads From Liverpool”, will never be approached, in my view. Their song, ” Yesterday”, is the most covered song in history, etc.
Harley-Davidson, Simon and Garfunkel, Abbott and Costello, Bill Gates and Paul Allen, and the husband and wife transplant surgeons whom purchased a house from a relative of my wife. It is a” tear down”, in their words, a brick front home built in 1960, beautiful ocean front on Narragansett Bay in Bristol, R.I. They paid a cool 2 million cash a couple of years prior.
In remains empty, as they are too busy to oversee the demolition and rebuild and so forth. They reside in Denver, they are wonderful people, and both of them work very hard to earn a lot of money. I suppose if only one of them was a doctor, they might have to tone down the plans a bit. Do their own pool maintenance, etc.
I am aware that this is not a music site, but, please allow me to give more kudos to the Beatles. How about a band that had 4 lead men, and wrote and performed songs that were so vastly different and original. They had hard rock, Helter-Skelter, ballads like Hey Jude and Let It Be. Children’s songs, Yellow Submarine, and All Together Now.
I Am The Walrus, to Yesterday and Blackbird. Julia, Michelle and Lovely Rita. Songs about circus performers, Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite. A bit of country, What Goes On , Honey Don’t. ( Carl Perkins wrote that one though)
It was one of their very last songs but I always loved “The Long and Winding Road”
Rick Beato explained how she writes, etc., that Taylor has a few songwriters to assist her. I give her credit for appealing to the masses and she is a tremendous crowd pleaser. She is extremely talented, but, I do not listen to her, ever.
I guess the polar opposite to her might be Bob Dylan, and I listen to him all the time. To each his own, I guess.
Paul Mc Cartney has stated many times that the best song ever written, in his opinion, is ” God Only Knows’, The Beach Boys.
Lennon wrote the walrus song because he was tired of fans always trying to figure out the meaning of the lyrics of other songs. He said, ” Let them try and find out what those words mean.
Ironically, ” Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds,” contrary to common belief, had zero to do with LSD. Son Julian came home with a painting, and he told dad it was Lucy In The Sky… But the initials LSD ! All of The Beatles tried LSD, but that song was not inspired by that.
And Lennon was addicted to heroin , for a time. That did inspire, ” Cold Turkey.” Julia song about mom. Dear Prudence and Mia Farrows sister, Mr. Kite about a circus performer ,and so forth.
My love loves “God Only Knows” and sure has picked out for my service if I go first…
So who is Taylor Swift’s wingman haha ? You have to admit that’s a lot of talent in one person. But to me her songs all sound the same. “You Belong with Me,” “Love Story,” “Shake it Off” great defining songs, the rest meh IMO.
The Beatles? Agree absolutely the best of hundreds of bands and single performers. So much variety. Lately I’ve been obsessed with “I Am the Walrus.” You’ve been a naughty girl, you let your knickers down.
But even the Beatles didn’t by any means dominate the era. We just returned from the Malt Shop Memories Cruise and heard fantastic performances from The DooWop Project, Platters, Coasters, Drifters, Four Tops, Darlene Love, Beach Boys, Rascals, Chubby Checked, wow !!!
Oops Chubby Checker… still fantastic at 83 looks 50
Music lover here. Favorite Beatles song—“Here, There and Everywhere “. I read somewhere it was Paul McCartney’s too.
George Benson also recorded a beautiful version; he both sang and then gave an instrumental version on guitar. Music is magic.
That is a great song. She’s leaving Home, Blackbird, In My Life, Don’t Let Me Down. Rain, ( The backwards lyrics at the end), Paperback Writer, the frere Jacques backing harmonies, etc.
As a 9 year old child, I still remember watching the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show.
I also like listening to reproductions of their music by symphonies.
Olin, you sound like a true Renaissance man.
Think you miss giving credit to George Martin who was a tremendous part of how their sound evolved. Tomorrow Never Knows, Revolution 9, Strawberry Fields et Al..
Of course, he was a tremendous producer and contributed so much. He pretended to look the other way when the boys were smoking pot, also.
One of the things that I love about them is the fact that on the albums, , often there would be 4 different lead singers. Abbey Road with ” Something”, George, “Octopus’s Garden”, Ringo. Paul and ” Maxwells Silver Hammer”, John and ” Come Together”. I think those are the first 4 songs.
CSNY had four lead men too, I guess, although Young didn’t spend too I much time with them. But, they had different bass and drum players and so forth. And every member of that band said that The Beatles were their favorite.
How about the roof top concert, with Billy Preston on keyboards! Imagine if they had him in the band more.
Most bands had one lead singer, Plant, Jagger, Paul Rodgers, and so forth. And if the late Quincy Jones was correct, I do not think he was, how well would they have done had they had much more talented musicians? I feel they did pretty well.
Yep, this isn’t a music site. But I have to agree…. Those guys were all you said they were. Damn good singers too.
Yes, and they all had a great sense of humor. When asked, after their first U.S. tour, “ How did you find America? “. George replied, “ We took a left at Greenland and there it was!” Then they were asked “ are you going to get a haircut? “. Reply, “ No, thanks, we had one yesterday. “. “ It looks like they missed a bit!”. Ringo “ you should have seen us the day before.”
Yes, tremendous singers. How about this, when Ringo sang , his backing singers were Lennon and Mc Cartney , and sometimes George.
Because of Ringos limited range,Paul wrote easier songs for him,” A little help from my friends.” , was one. And he hit the high note at the end.
And Paul wrote a song for Badfinger , “ If you want it.”
