Even though I’m retired now, I have certain routines to get me going every day. First, I make the coffee, then I peel an orange, and finally I curl up on my sofa with my coffee, orange and iPhone and read the latest posts that come into my inbox from Humble Dollar.
This week on two occasions, I didn’t receive my daily newsletter! I finally went directly to the website and got caught up on all the recent posts that I may have missed. But I actually felt like my day was off kilter without the newsletter, and I marveled how it’s become such an important part of my daily routine. I spent the morning thinking about Jonathan and how his work has benefitted me. I wonder how he can manage to keep this thing going while dealing with his profound diagnosis.
I wonder if the rest of you start your day the same way. I really enjoy reading the forum posts, articles and comments every morning. It feels like you all are talking in my living room when you comment on the posts. The varied opinions are thought provoking, and the discussions, sometimes lively, are usually very respectful. I picture you all bantering in my living room, and when the conversations are over and I’ve read the final post, I picture us all getting on with the rest of our routines.
Thank you Fran. I don’t get the daily email but I check HD and read up on the wisdom of its contributors and commentators several times a day. I feel I’m missing something if I don’t.
Fran, thanks for this and very well put. Nice to have coffee with you.
I’m almost embarrassed to say that reading HD is the last thing I do for the day, after the newspaper, email, social media feeds, NYT puzzles, and TIPSwatch.
Very nice post.
I wake up between 5 and 6 each morning – out of old work habit, make a cup of coffee, pick up my iPad and go to HD. I look for new posts and then see if there are any comments on one of my posts. It’s a routine i have come to rely upon and enjoy.
I then look at the stock market futures out of habit, but for no good purpose. After that I scan several online papers and news services I subscribe to, the latest and most enlightening being Project-Syndicate. These activities generally generate a moan.
Some time during the day an idea for a HD post will be triggered. It could be from reading, from watching a YouTube video, a social media post and frequently from overhearing people talk.
In any case, Involvement with HumbleDollar and getting to know Jonathan have been a big part of enjoying retirement.
Fran, thanks. I’m sipping my coffee and enjoying your post.
True All That!
Yep, HD every morning, although since I’ve never learned to like the taste of coffee, in my case it’s half coffee, half hot chocolate.
Then after HD, on to the puzzles and Duolingo…
I agree. My wife has never posted anything, but feels like she knows Jonathan personally as well as some of the colorful characters here on HD.
Last year I wrote an article about HD being my breakfast club, citing the many walks of life represented.
Yes! And we all feel like welcomed members of this community!
I’m in full agreement with you and your routine. My day starts with a strong cup of Joe and side order of Humble Dollar. It feels like I’m waking up surrounded by good people with interesting thoughts to share.
