So You Think Your Pension Journey Was Tough?

Mark Crothers  |  Nov 6, 2025

I’m a bit of a history buff (nerd), and lately I’ve been reading “The Roman Army: A Social and Institutional History,” a very good read if you have any interest in ancient Rome. I came across an interesting fact I was unaware of.
We have a lot to thank the 19th-century German Chancellor Otto von Bismarck for. He created the first state pension in 1889. But you might be surprised to learn that nearly two thousand years earlier,

Let’s think about the minimum wage and what it means for financial security

R Quinn  |  Nov 4, 2025

We hear a lot these days about the minimum wage, that it is not a living wage and hasn’t been increased since 2009. Both are true. But there is more to it than that.
I am not trying to make a case for or against raising the minimum wage. However, there are consequences that proponents seem to ignore or gloss over.
I do think the answer to long-term financial security is not found in raising the minimum wage rate,

Joined up Thinking??

Mark Crothers  |  Nov 3, 2025

I braved the cold and windy weather last night for a walk, heading back to my vacation home. I was magically drawn into the local hotel by the thought of a crackling turf fire and a nice pint of Guinness to warm my wind-chilled bones. It was an excellent choice. I got to listen in on a conversation a group of twenty-somethings were having at the cubby beside mine.
I enjoy eavesdropping but normally don’t get the chance.

Rule of 55: Early Retirement

Bogdan Sheremeta  |  Nov 1, 2025

MOST PEOPLE THINK their retirement accounts are completely locked until age 59½ due to the 10% early withdrawal penalty, but that’s not really true. There are many ways to access your money earlier without the penalty, and knowing them can give you flexibility. Of course, you shouldn’t be touching your retirement accounts unless you’re ready to retire.
Here are some distributions that are not subject to the 10% penalty, per the IRS list:

Birth or adoption (up to $5,000 per child)
Series of substantially equal payments (72t)
First-time homebuyer (up to $10,000,

A Nightmare on Destitution Street

Mark Crothers  |  Oct 31, 2025

It’s Halloween, l thought we could have a little scary story today…Booo👻
Mark stared into the glowing screen, watching the blood drain from his reflection. Twenty-three years feeding the warehouse beast, and the numbers whispered their cruel truth: $47,000. A ghost of what might have been.
The employer match had waited, an unopened door. But there were other hungers, other demons whispering of pleasures that couldn’t wait, of tomorrows that never arrived.
“Should’ve saved more,” he breathed into the frigid air,

When planning isn’t actually planning and you find out too late. .

R Quinn  |  Oct 25, 2025

The following is a post on a blog – part of a discussion why seniors should not pay property taxes.
What caught my eye was “we planned ahead” and “Plans changed. He passed unexpectedly.”
“We planned ahead, made sure that we were out of debt when we retired. House and cars were paid. We sold our family sized house and moved into a one smaller one, paid it off. That was the plan and we were comfortable with both receiving SS and his police retirement.”
“Plans changed.

The Paradox of Smart Money Decisions

Adam M. Grossman  |  Oct 25, 2025

SOME YEARS AGO, the scientist Edward Fredkin identified a quirk of human behavior.
When it comes to making decisions, Fredkin found, we tend to allocate our time inefficiently. Suppose, for example, you’re at the grocery store, looking for something basic like paper towels. In a big supermarket, there might be a dozen or more choices. The result: Because there are so many options, it can be hard to choose among them. In the absence of big differences,

Roth Hidden Benefits

Bogdan Sheremeta  |  Oct 25, 2025

WHEN MOST PEOPLE think of Roth IRAs or Roth 401(k)s, they just think “tax-free withdrawals.” But that’s only part of the story.
Roth accounts can protect you from financial traps that catch many retirees off guard. Here are five key advantages to keep in mind:

1. Tax Rate Protection
One thing we can’t control is future tax rates.
Did you know that in the 1980s, the highest federal tax rate was 50%?

Retirement Income Goals: Bottom Up Beats Top-Down

David Powell  |  Oct 9, 2025

When I was younger, I pictured retirement as a life much like our working years, minus child-raising and commuting costs, but with more travel and higher medical bills. That vision was easy. The harder part was translating it into a retirement income goal.
This is where confusion sets in, and why discussions about “income replacement ratios” often go in circles. People’s situations differ too widely for one-size-fits-all advice. Some work jobs with steady income, others have income which varies a lot each year.

Cash Balance Plan Explained

Bogdan Sheremeta  |  Oct 4, 2025

IMAGINE YOU ARE already doing all things possible to minimize your taxes:

You are maxing out your pre-tax 401k
You do tax loss harvesting
You did tax efficient placement
You are maximizing Roth IRA through Backdoor Roth

But what other strategies can you use to minimize taxes? You also might not want to start a business or buy real estate.
Another option that many people aren’t aware of is the cash balance plan (CBP).

You can’t prove the assumptions you may rely on. How did you test yours?

R Quinn  |  Oct 3, 2025

Within the archives of HD is this comment:
“I built a spreadsheet and proved that the math worked for me and my wife with our facts and assumptions.”
Making assumptions means accepting something as true or certain without proof, often based on your own beliefs, past experiences rather than on concrete evidence. You can’t prove an assumption, but you can test it.
The exact subject associated with the above comment, is not important. Suffice to say though that it related to lifetime retirement income security –

New 2025 Tax Deductions

Bogdan Sheremeta  |  Sep 20, 2025

THE IRS JUST released a new form called Schedule 1-A, which includes all the new tax bill deductions.
I wanted to quickly go through some of it, so that you are more aware of the new potential savings opportunities.
I’ve previously discussed some portions of the bill, but this is the first time we have a peek of the new lines.
All of these deductions are in addition to the standard deduction or itemized deduction.

Retirement Begins Long Before You Retire

Dennis Friedman  |  Sep 15, 2025

Including my time delivering newspapers, I’ve had a total of ten different employers in my life. Some jobs were more memorable than others. One of my early roles was at a company that created merchandise catalogs for department stores.
I was twenty—shy, insecure, and working part-time while attending college. I mostly did the tasks no one else wanted: vacuuming, taking out the trash, cleaning the bathrooms. Yet, two women at that company saw potential in me that I couldn’t yet see in myself.

What is retirement?

mytimetotravel  |  Sep 13, 2025

This issue has come up before, but I was reminded of it this morning when Ben Carlson’s blog linked to a piece by a doctor who followed the FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early) approach but now works part time. He is thankful he discovered FIRE, but sees three problems with it, one being the definition of retirement. He writes: “I “retired” in 2018, but I still do work I love. I practice part-time as a hospice doctor,

Navigating the Unknowns of Financial Decisions

Adam M. Grossman  |  Sep 13, 2025

WHEN IT COMES to financial decisions, there are, as I’ve argued before, two answers to every question: what the calculator says, and how you feel about it. There’s a fly in the ointment, though: Calculator answers might appear to be based in logic, but they’re still imperfect.
Why?
Ian Wilson, a former executive at General Electric, explained it this way: “No amount of sophistication is going to allay the fact that all knowledge is about the past,
