Great Article Laura, this line is awesome but as someone with almost 30 years at one company a decent size corporation, these are rare and if done, done just because someone likes you. We have 200+ people in our building and not a single HR, what a change from when GE owned us. Anyone that had a company bought by GE will get this reference :) But that was the moment we realized this is what retirement looks like for a self-employed couple in their mid-60s. There would be no goodbye parties, no gold watches and—most germane to this article—no pensions.

In college, you should have asked for your coat back, probably would have given it to you. Living without a cell is draconian

Dave you should stop thinking so much about Jersey, it sounds fine, your wife likes it and NY. Like all places it I am sure has some good and some bad. I can guarantee it doesn't think about you at all.

Great story, next time also show him how to save a couple thousand more dollars by selling the CR-V himself on Facebook marketplace. We have done that 3 times in the past 5 years and made at least 2K more than the dealer best offer for trade.

That was my strategy coming up. Once we became financially independent, the small ability to choose colors and options and the great ability to get the new safety features and fuel economy as well as the ability to make it happen in a day overrode the small savings of 2-3 year old

Jeff, I loved my Saabs, my favorite of all time. Many made it over 200K without issues and so much fun to drive. On your Subaru if you like it as I read between the lines you do, look for a similar one with low miles and continue the ride, with the internet it is easy to find them

I am with you on this one, add to that he has a new seemingly lovely GF, 73 and in good health. I would even suggest that at 73 he may do more than a 4% withdrawal. He is so far above the mean he should really appreciate that for what it is

My sense is your dad didn't take what he did in either case as courageous. Having said that compared to fighting in a world war both probably felt relatively risk free. I know it was a different time but we moved across country with 3 small children's from NE to SE and I recall discussing with my wife "if we don't like it, the decision is not irreversible" Great article and tribute to your father, he took IMHO a modest risk and it paid off for many

Great article Larry my first of yours. "Some people find a lot to criticize about cruises. Not us." Some people find a lot to criticize :)

That is really hard to say, and I would offer the other side of the coin. The person that bought it was a huge fan and feels some connection by having it. They will probably die with it and that is fine with them. Not all purchases need to have a ROI
