Has anyone found a 55+ guide (that is not an undercover sales brochure) that includes checklists of things to consider, recommended reserves, etc. For most of us this is the first time considering such a move. I’ve not even lived in an HOA.

Uber/lift could be ideal when readily available. None of the hassles or expenses of car ownership. Depending on the number of trips, one could save money. My auto insurance bill alone would pay for many trips. Meeting others, the drivers. Helping others - most Uber drivers really need the money. So instead of focusing on the loss, consider the potential gains….

So true. Have a will and communicate it to the siblings. So many unintentionally leave a battlefield behind because of no will, wishes communicated to only one of the children, side deals with one of the children, etc. Can creat decades of anger and resentment.

Wow, $5k deposit. That was the first warning sign. Was this a million dollar condo? I have rented many homes, my deposit’s have never exceeded $1k.

He wanted freedom so he took on a job that requires 60 hour work weeks??? Is there an endgame where the money rolls in without having to work so many hours? Few if any beat the house long term, by definition most must lose on average. Not against shooting for the stars, but there should be an endgame and a limit to the support.

Lifetime taxes are another consideration. When I run my numbers, delaying SS results in significantly lower fed taxes. Adding strategic withdraws (max out lower tax brackets) with Roth conversions and post-tax accounts, further reduced taxes.

Well done! Although it appears you could have retired much earlier than 67. I assume you loved working as. I retired at 59 and have loved every minute is retirement. Could not imagine working until 67. Physically, off my peak at 59, I suspect that I won’t get any better in my late 60’s. The 60’s are precious years physically.

Shows the effect of making good financial decisions. I know many that have blown their inheritances on new cars and the like, lottery winners who end up no better off after a few years of blowing this windfall. A similar event happened to me, I received $10k and purchased a small house (9 3/4% mortgages, it cost “only” $110k, which seemed high at the time). This “entry level” home is now valued in the mid 400’s. A young person today would need quit a larger inheritance and salary to afford it.

Consider splitting your time between two locations. Live a few months at the beach. A good way to test the waters. If finances are limited, rent out your home base.

Yes, in my small town there are plenty of in-city areas to put new housing but they prefer raw land outside of town. There is existing older duplex and quad housing stock that make great affordable housing, but builders are not building any new ones. Losing your view. - I have heard many retiree stories of buying retirement homes based on a location with a view only to lose it at a later date due to development. Cautionary tale for those considering their dream retirement home. A realtor should provide a warning. They are supposed to know the local area, right? But based in their incentive structure, most only care about the current transaction.
