That being said, he needs to understand a job provides stability, social security, medicare, insurance, and all the things he needs. Gambling is an addiction indeed, only a professional can make that diagnosis. I would not give him money ( does he live with you)? He needs to go through the school of hard knocks to understand what Life 101 is all about.

    • I kept reading your article to the end. I don’t know why your wife married you, given your attitude towards women. As best I can tell, you’re using your upbringing to continue down the path of “I wear the pants in the family”. You never in your article apologized for that.

    • I could not disagree with this article in stronger terms. Annuities are sold, not bought. Anybody is the business knows that. That’s why insurance companies have glass towers in the toniest areas of major metropolitan cities. In addition, all you need to do is look at late 08 into 09 to see what can happen to insurance companies listed on the NYSE. Many were on the brink of insolvency, AIG by far the largest. Just google how many insurance companies have declared bankruptcy. You’ll be surprised. If they go under, you lose all of it. The S and P has returned 7.9% over the last 30 years, and 7.2% since 1957. If you feel the need to play it extra safe, keep a combination of bonds and cash. I have not held bonds until recently, it was a loser as an investment. I keep 2 years of cash on hand. Many people will lower their spending in a down year. I prefer having 2 -3 years of cash on hand. I do understand many are not able to do this. I would like Humble Dollar to take a poll of writers on this site who are registered brokers and ask their opinion of annuities. The only people I know who recommend them are people who sell them.

    • Hi, I’ve had dogs and cats all my life. I am now on the Board of Directors at First Coast No More Homeless Pets in Jacksonville FL. We were the original group that started the No Kill movement. I have seen what happens to “mixed breed” dogs. They make up the majority of dogs in shelters. Because the breed dogs all have their own rescues. I will tell you this - rescue dogs are by far the most loyal. They know they’ve been rescued and will be your best friend for life. So PLEASE check out your shelters before you fork over 2500 for a breed. BTW, every breed comes with health issues common to that breed.

    • Good for you. Assuming you have around 500K per year in disposable income. Obviously you like to brag ( we fly first class) Don’t break your arm patting yourself on your back. Curious, how much do you give away to charities every year?

    • I do not understand, for the life of me, with the fixation on traveling everywhere when you retire. I retired at 48, and couldn’t wait to start teaching golf again ( was an LPGA Professional, but couldn’t make enough to live on so I built Athletic Clubs and did very well ) So I started teaching golf instead of playing it. I think people would get more satisfaction out of a second career or being an active volunteer at something they are passionate about. But traveling to far away places, what is the point? You sight see, stay in a hotel and eat out. I don’t see the excitement. Honestly, people do it because somebody like Johnathan said that’s what the go go years entail. I hope people who read this will give some thought to finding your passion, no mater what it is. You will have more satisfaction with your life than flying to the next location to sightsee and stay in hotels. Honest.

    • Please don’t be Debbie Downer. If you think that way you may very well end up that way. I know people who moved into life stage campuses and love it. Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville is one I’m interested in. It’s beautiful, you can start in your own home and move accordingly. There’s another close by that is next to the TPC in Ponte Vedra. With its own 9 hole golf course!!!! Everybody is in the same stage in life, looking for friends. My older friends who chose to stay at home we the ones who were lonely as they aged.

    • Thanks for the great article. My concern is I’m single, with a sister and brother who are older and in poor health. No other relatives. My neighbors are good friends, and I’m thinking of asking him to be the executor of my estate. It’s fairly substantial. I worry often about being older and in poor health when I’m living in one of those communities without anyone watching over me. What happens if you pick the wrong one? I don’t want to go into one until I’m 80. I’m in excellent health and am still a Teaching Pro (golf). I haven’t seen an article written on this subject on the humbledollar. Your thoughts?

    • I wanted to thank you so much for the timely article. At 69, I’m in excellent shape ( years in the fitness industry and good eating habits ) and currently more than able to navigate my houses. ( one in MN one in FL ). However, after seeing my older brother and sister decline, I have made the decision to move into a 55+ residence at 80 (sooner if need be). I am currently dealing with both of them, and it’s heartbreaking. My sister’s health is bad, and her husband recently diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. My brother has dementia, but has to live in caregivers. They live out in the country, and so far refuse to move. I hope anyone reading this realizes the impact on their families when there are no plans in place for the last phase of your life. If you think “I’ll just wait until I have to” you’re not only putting yourself in harms way, you’re not being fair to those who love you and will be responsible for figuring out what to do with you at the end.

    • To be honest, I don’t understand it when people say they were not taught personal finance. It should not take multiple degrees to understand you can not spend more than you make. Period. Your situation was obviously different, your wife stole your money. That being said, giving anyone complete control over your finances was a dumb thing to do. Sorry but that’s simply the truth
