I received a HumbleDollar friend request on Facebook this morning. I did not find this unusual because I sometimes share HD posts I feel may be helpful to people. Of course I accepted the friend request.
I just received a private message from HD. The sender was offering free consultations for financial services. Jonathan’s picture was at the top of the message, as well as at the bottom, which leads you to believe that he is the author.
Otherwise there was no indication that it was from anyone other than JC.
I unfriended this person.
Wow! Thanks for posting the link, David. That was very clever of Jonathan. And thanks, Dan, for relating your Facebook experience. Kinda sad the things people try to do (and often succeed).
People have been doing things like this for many years. In most cases, Jonathan seemed fairly phlegmatic about it.
On Amazon, you’ll find someone named Lisa Pendley, who has created a slew of “workbooks” which piggyback on the title of other books, e.g. “The Best of Jonathan Clements Workbook”. All these things hit Amazon back in May. Her search engine optimization tries to get you to buy the “workbook” when you buy the book title you were searching for. I’ll pass, thank you.
Then there’s someone who seemed to really rile up our dear Editor. Archie Nickels presented himself as a financial planner, established a social media presence on the biggest networks, and created a web site. What really pissed off Jonathan was that Mr. Nickels began ripping off whole HD articles each time they posted on HumbleDollar, via the site’s RSS feed. Jonathan tried to get the attention of Archie Nickels, asking nicely to cease, but with no success until this:

I guess this is one of the disadvantages of social media. Bottom feeders will do anything for a dollar and show absolutely no respect towards anyone’s memory.
As I was posting this, I received another personal Facebook message, asking if I would like to join for free.
I blocked the sender.
