Medicare Open Enrollment and Medigap

AUTHOR: James Mcglynn on 11/25/2024

The Medicare Annual Enrollment period runs from October 15th to December 7th. I initially believed this was the only time I could switch my Plan G Medigap supplement. However, these dates specifically apply to those changing Part D or Medicare Advantage plans.

In contrast, Medigap plans can be changed at any time during the year, although underwriting may be required. I turned 65 in June and enrolled in Medicare Plan G, already changing plans once during my initial 6-month sign-up period. I switched to a more expensive Plan G that includes access to a premium fitness facility for pickleball.

Given that it’s possible to switch Medigap plans any month of the year, I should have the flexibility to find a plan that meets my fitness needs—provided I can pass underwriting.

I’m not on Medicare yet, but had united healthcare through an employer in 2023; by far the absolute worst provider of health insurance I’ve had in 30 years! I would avoid them
like the plague given a choice.

I have had Medigap with United Health aside from a couple of years with Humana and one year on a UH Medicare Advantage plan. The only real difference was that the UH EOBs were much easier to understand than Humana’s.

Is your employer self-funding? The issue may be as much with your employer as UH.

I am with United Medigap plan G in Michigan and use the Renew Active program at my local gym since 2022. Renew Active replaced Silver Sneakers in 2019. I have reviewed the website and did not see any mention of Renew Active being dropped or changed. Another unusual thing about the United program I’m on, their rate increases come in May so stay tuned!

Not directly related, but a lot of Medicare recipients are going to be very upset by United Healthcare and the AARP advantage and supplemental plans will be dropping the “Silver Sneakers” gym benefits in 2025 that were very popular and included many generous gym benefits. In fact, at the Exercise Coach that we go to, the owner told us today he immediately changed his advertising to remove the reference to that insurance benefit as it is no longer covered.

Good luck. I fail underwriting so can’t change unless I want a much higher premium. And even that’s not guaranteed.

Generally any kind of plan changes for Medicare Supplements are dependent on the laws in your state of residence. It is very difficult to generalizee…….
