I am winding down a 30+ yr career as a family physician, and was a the primary physician to many - very many. Healthcare has been largely commodified. Expect even more physician churn, and pressure to see Nurse Practitioners or PAs. If you want a more personal, more responsive touch, check out Direct Primary Care or even concierge options in your area. On the bright side, and in contrast to 10 or more years ago, Medicare (Original; Medicare Advantage is a different topic) is now one of the better and more reliable payers, and is accepted by most docs in the areas I have worked in. Great luck to you - and yes, Stay Healthy.
Denial of our individual personal mortality and knowledge of the certainty of same is the age-old tension. Thank you for the open discussion and prompts to live thoughtfully. We all know on some level that a next day is not guaranteed for anyone.

Much truth here. Regarding #2, I am so fascinated by the stories (narratives) we create to make sense of our lives. Thanks Jonathan.

It's a judgment call each time. Time is valuable and, as other posters have said, do not like accepting sloppy business practice.

There is one song that stands above all other (to me at least ...) on this topic: "There is No Time" by Lou Reed, from the "New York" album.
