    • Dear Jonathan, I'm so sorry to read this and regret that I didn't know until I saw the NYT article. I truly enjoyed writing for Humble Dollar because of your fine editing and encouraging words. I wish you the best. Thanks.

    • Excellent column. I'm sorry about your loss, but it's an important story to share. Skin is our largest organ. It deserves care and our attention. Thanks

    • In the 1970s when I was a teen, we used to drive over the New York state line to drink "adult beverages," a mere 20 minutes if you lived in certain parts of Pennsylvania where not only was the legal age always 21 but you couldn't buy "hard liquor" anywhere but stores owned by the state's Liquor Control Board. Of course, drinking and driving long distances was a dangerous practice, and I'm happy my friends and I returned safely home.

    • It seems wrong that because poorer retirees like me feel compelled to choose an Advantage plan, our health care will be less comprehensive, and we will end up facing big medical bills we can't afford at some point. My friends in the U.K. are often surprised at the inequities of health care in the U.S.

    • Both my children had tuition paid through either an academic scholarship (wealthy endowment in private university) or by a state lottery funded program for bright students. But housing and other expenses add up, so they have debt. And yet both are doing well so college can still be worth it for some.

    • I lucked out with a visit to the local SS office a year or so before I retired at 64. The employee did a thorough job of explaining my choices and gave me a printout of estimates as to what I would receive if I waited until certain ages. This provided me a clear view of what I could expect. Because I had been without a full-time job for 18 months followed by several years in the only position I could find but paid what I had made in my late 30s, it wasn't going to make a huge difference if I waited longer. Combined with an early retirement incentive because of Covid and my own fear of contracting it, it made sense to do it. It also was a job that had nothing to do with my skills or education.

    • Maybe, but I rarely carry change on my person. Usually some in the car. Perhaps they just didn't want to walk it back to the corral. I recall being initially confused about the mechanics of it when I first started going there. Probably the reason. But I wouldn't give up a quarter. I still pick up pennies!!
