    • Congratulations on the Volvo S-80.....that's not just a hole-in-one....that's a "whole one"! I did get my first "hole-in-one" a few weeks ago....but no S-80 for me....just a bunch of squirrels chattering and romping in the leaves; I think they were cheering for me though! Heck, if you're shooting in the 80's, your score is ~20pts better than my best which is still.....>than three digits. I agree, I hate being a crappy golfer also but when a person reaches that "old man age"... at least for me, that's the best that can be expected!

    • Great article Dick....ROTFL. Nothing better than waking up to a touch of humor. I love golf and your alien friend describes it best: Alien: So, you humans amuse yourselves with a little ball, frustrating yourselves while spending lots of money to do so? I remember coming home after a game with my buds. I had cuts and scratches on my arms and legs; my wife thought I got into a brawl with a bunch of cats. Na......I told her after losing a half dozen of those $3.00 - $4.00 balls in the woods, I better go on a rescue mission otherwise my golf budget would be seriously jeopardized. I'm now starting to learn that when I face a questionable drive (woods on all sides) I'll haul out an "OP ball" from my golf bag then give it a good wack......yeah....it usually ends up in the woods also!

    • Great article Adam.....I always enjoy reading your no nonsense views. I started collecting SS at age 62. My rational at the time was being able to do things (travel, etc.) while still young and healthy enough to do so. Today, I'm dealing with some health issues that might not get me to age 70. So, no regrets on my decision to collect early. And......if God give me a few more years to spend on the "green side of the sod", I doubt my attitude with alter from.....no regrets!

    • Same here......it's been at least 30 years since I read Covey's books. Although all of the "7 Habits" had great merit, the one that really resonated with me was "Seek First to Understand, Then To Be Understood. Listen to people sincerely". I applied that behavior to my job and still use it to this day....to better understand my bride of 45 years. Here's another one I learned during my wonderful 45 years of marriage....Rule #1...Your wife is always right. Rule #2 When your wife is wrong....see Rule #1.

    • Wow Jonathan......you just hit another one out of the park... outstanding article!! Like others have said, I first got to lay my eyes on your well penned articles in the WSJ; I still get the WSJ everyday but there has been a void in every issue without your valuable contributions. So happy that you started HD. #4 above resonates with me. My wife and I lived in a log home for nearly 20 years.... loved every moment of it but it was lifetime of maintenance. Three years ago, we (both in late 60's) decided to downsize and built a small ranch house. Really miss the ambience of the log home but the downsizing has turned out to be a wise decision. This past spring, I was diagnosed with a very serious health issue. Not sure where that journey will take us but I'm very happy that we no longer have the burden of the ongoing maintenance of the log home.

    • Best part of the article......the last paragraph!!!! "A final thought: Choi did identify one—and only one—area in which there was broad agreement between academics and popular authors. On the topic of mutual funds, nearly all agreed that index funds were a better bet than actively managed funds."

    • Great article Jonathan..........you have always been an inspiration to me. You and John Bogle are two of the most influential folks that I've had the honor to find and follow. Thank you Jonathan for all you have done for us paupers.....you are truly one of the best!

    • Hi Kristine: Congratulations on your retirement......glad you are starting to find a comfortable routine. I have to comment on your comment "I started playing my clarinet—something I haven’t done since I was in high school". I had to chuckle when I read that. My wife retired two years ago and one of her long..... yearning desires was to.... once again.... play her clarinet. I read your article to her, and she had the cutes smile.... like wow....so cool. So.... a final word on her clarinet. After she retired, we went on a "leave no stone unturned" search throughout the house looking for her clarinet. To her disappointment.... the where-abouts of her clarinet remain a mystery. She thinks perhaps she borrowed it to someone, and it never got returned......or it got lost during our recent move to a new house. So, to satisfy her musical impulse......she purchased a ukulele. Boy...those little suckers can really let out an ear-piercing screech! So.... when I see that little noise maker come out of the case, I grab my golf clubs and head to the driving range!

    • baldscreen (Chris). I would appreciate it if you would, or someone would elaborate more in detail about your comment: "which is if you take out a reverse mortgage as a couple and use the proceeds, that asset will not be available for the surviving spouse for end of life care". My wife and I are not currently in a position to do a reverse mortgage, but it is something I have given some thought to. I would really like to know more about the pros and cons of the reverse mortgage. We also live in the Midwest. We are in our late 60's with some health issues; house is paid for. Passing on $ to our kids is not a priority.
