Strongly agree with President Lincoln's sentiments. Also think that facts are facts. Current SS retirement benefits are paid by current workers, and not taxing SS benefits will hasten the financial crisis brewing at the SS Trust Fund. Regardless of many US citizens' desires to believe otherwise.
I particularly agree with Jonathan's notion that "Better together" is the best path forward in all aspects of life, including one's final chapters. Hold on tight to each other! And thank you, Jonathan for everything you have done across the years and miles. Godspeed!
I volunteer at a local Habitat for Humanity Restore operation. Just once a week, 4-5 hours. The store sells donated plumbing and construction materials, furniture, etc. The funds generated at Restore help to finance local home building projects. It's fun, keeps me active, plus I get to scout for treasures at a low cost for my own home improvement projects! I also participate in Habitat's home construction projects each summer.
I like your comment, Dennis "That’s how I built my wealth over the years—by not owning a lot of stuff" but must add that you've done a number of other things correctly, too. From other articles you've written for HD, I know you've invested in a diversified portfolio, saved diligently, worked long and well in your industry, and possibly most important, not taken foolish financial risks. Oftentimes, the best financial recipe is one part humility, two parts knowledge, and three parts perseverance! Well done.
