i got covid within a few days of a recent trip (within the last month). most likely that my exposure was in the airplane cabin as someone in my row had a coughing illness. so still consider taking/using a mask during those higher risk exposure times when in close quarters for an extended period of time with limited ventilation.
another benefit of going the treasury bill route with emergency funds is the cost of liquidation should an emergency need arise. should be less costly to sell a treasury than a brokered CD in the secondary market
thanks for the clear explanation of I bond features. super useful for anyone in the process of deciding whether to continue to hold or redeem. As pointed out, Treasury Direct's way of reporting I Bond value is one of the quirky, nonintuitive aspects:
This suggests that, for new bonds, you won’t see any interest show up in your account until the beginning of month No. 5.
Beane was operating on a budget much lower than most teams, so he was forced to seek low-cost inefficiencies in the talent acquisition market. He was able to exploit inefficiencies he identified for awhile until other teams realized what he was doing. The league caught up to him, and the tactics he used then were eventually neutralized.
Please discuss blood clot risk, mitigation strategy, and warning signs with your orthopedist. Unfortunately, a close family member, who was otherwise healthy pre-op with no history of clots, experienced this complication a few months after her first knee replacement. It was a significant setback as clots migrated from leg to lungs (pulmonary embolism). fortunately she slowly recovered, was happy with how her knee felt after completing rehab, and did proceed later with the 2nd knee which was uncomplicated.
AEDs (automated external defibrillators) have become more commonplace in public spaces in recent years and I do wonder if that trend will eventually extend into the home as prices continue to fall. one of the great features is that they have become so user-friendly. basically, a layperson just needs to be able to follow the audio cues from the device in the "heat of the moment" to potentially save someone from a deadly heart rhythm disturbance.
it seems to me that another way to simplify the posthumous transition of savings bond ownership to a non-spouse would be to make sure the bonds are registered electronically, name a beneficiary, and leave instruction for the beneficiary to have the bonds re-issued in their name upon inheritance. that re-issuing should trigger a 1099-INT for the amount of accrued interest to the estate of the deceased previous owner.
another option for appreciated shares of actively managed funds in taxable accounts is to donate them. potential triple tax benefit by avoiding large year-end taxable distributions, not realizing capital gains that would occur by selling, and getting itemized deduction.
regarding short term capital gain distributions for an actively managed mutual fund in a taxable account, does the individual investor holding period determine what portion is distributed to the individual as short-term vs long-term? for instance, investor A purchased all her fund shares >10 years ago. investor B purchased all his fund shares within the last 6 months. the active mutual fund distributes a $1/share STCG in addition to LTCG/dividends at year end. do investor A and investor B both receive the same $1/share STCG or does investor A receive a smaller STCG distribution (but a larger LTCG) than investor B because A has held the shares much longer than B?
