I was legal counsel. When sometimes an employee told me about a mistake and my approach was to help him working out a solution but telling him to inform his boss asap and to tell boss that he already is working with Legal on a solution.
Same when I made a mistake....
At Bismark's introduction of SS the average life expectancy in Germeny was 38 years for men and 40 for women. A person of 65 could expect to live for 10 more years as a men, for 12 as a woman.
So no big risk to promise SS payments.
With all due respect for your efforts and intentions:
"My son will continue to live with my wife and me until we die or we need to move into an assisted living facility."
This might be too long. What will happen to him thereafter?
Have you researched options for him to move into assisted living, specialised in younger handicapped persons, already now? You could help him integrate and get used to the place. I am sure there are discussion groups for parents that might help you to find a place he likes. Please excuse if my reply is too blunt. I understand that you and your wife care a lot about your family and are in a difficult place.
Best wishes to you all.
It might work for the real property addict as long as they are ablebodied.
But the workload on the survivors might be challenging.
I would not like to burden my husband with the divestment of all the stuff.

Next time create an opportunity to tell granddaughter that millionairs are not recognised by what they spend but what they keep and invest.
