How and when did you find out about HumbleDollar?

I thought it might be fun to see if everyone can remember how and/or when they found out about HumbleDollar?

I, myself, am not 100% sure.  Maybe through the boglehead.org forums (which I’ve since abandoned)?  I can’t recall, but I’m pretty sure that since 2018 or ’19 I’ve been a daily follower.

Looking back I see my first article was mid 2021, so I probably found the site a year or two before that. I had just read How to Think About Money, and went on the web to look for more by Jonathan. Thankfully HD was in the search results.

I think it was 2017 when it popped up in my MSN newsfeed, I was very pleased to see the familiar name as I hadn’t heard anything from Johnathan since he left the WSJ & was very pleased, he was hosting a new website called HumbleDollar. It has vastly exceeded my expectations; we have been the beneficiaries of so many rich and varied articles containing tons of helpful information enhanced with commentary. Have a question on something or need advice? there’s likely someone who has already spent countless hours studying the topic & can summarize what one needs to know in a few paragraphs or less or point one in the right direction on where to go for further information. A rich & varied community of people has been formed who swap advice & exchange ideas regularly. Thank you, Johnathan.

I think your last sentence hits the nail on the head. It perfectly explains the value Jonathan mined when he created the HD community, it’s the lived experiences (both financial and other) people share on this site. 👏

I remember having read some of Jonathan’s Getting Going columns from the WSJ.

Then years later I read one of his articles in some other media and thought I remember this guy from years ago. I don’t remember how I connected to HD, but have looked forward to it on Wednesdays and Saturday mornings for years, and now look forward to receiving it every morning.

It is the only blog I read.

I was underwhelmed by the content on some personal finance sites and got to thinking of Jonathan’s straightforward columns in the Wall Street Journal. I wondered: Whatever happened to that guy? Anyway, I Googled him and found a very young HumbleDollar site. It sometimes felt like it was just me and the contributors because there were so few comments back then. How things have changed!

I read Jonathan’s columns in the Wall Street Journal for many years. When he mentioned in one of his articles that he was leaving the WSJ, I sent Jonathan a thank you email for providing great advice embedded in his columns. Jonathan responded that he had plans for continuing to write about finances in the near future.
Months later, Jonathan sends another email announcing the birth of Humble Dollar and a link to the new website.
I humbly appreciate Jonathan communicating and keeping in touch with his fans, and for providing a fantastic service and practical advice for decades.

I can’t remember specifically either. Like many others, I became acquainted with Jonathan by reading his column in the Wall Street Journal many years ago and I bought one of his books several years ago. His writing career and my investment career have coincided nicely.

Nice for something a little more lighthearted. For me it was an interview in Barron’s about his book My Money Journey. Which I promptly bought.

I have always been a reader of blogs since about 2007. I am sure HD was mentioned on one of the other blogs I follow. I have been a faithful reader since the beginning, I believe it was 2016? I didn’t know about Jonathan’s other work before, only HD. Chris

Fun question. Once in a great while an article from HumbleDollar would show up in my newsfeed. I bookmarked this piece from Jonathan several years ago. It originally had the title A Fulfilling Retirement, which is how it is bookmarked on my computer. I think after I came across a second or third great article tagged to HD, I started thinking I needed to check out the site. Once I did–in spring of 2023–I was hooked.
