If your personal computer has a disk drive, you can purchase older CD versions of Quicken off of eBay for very reasonable prices. As others have mentioned, the older versions are leaner, less glitchy, and require no ongoing fees. I personally use Quicken 2007 and find it to be very efficient for all of the basic functions others have mentioned. With having used Quicken over the years, I had the confidence to retire earlier than many of my peers because I didn’t have to guess at my basic recurring expenses. I could simply examine them through quicken for the previous 14 years.
Thank you for the informative article. It got me thinking... I have a DRIP account for UPS with an administrator company, which takes a share of each dividend. I'd like to relocate the shares to fidelity and avoid the fee (or part of it). Would this require selling the shares (paying CG tax) and then repurchasing?
Fidelity does not allow automatic or even online withdrawals from specified funds within 401(k) or 457 accounts. That option apparently is allowed only for IRAs. Withdrawals from a specified fund within a 401(k) or 457 can be done by telephone with a Fidelity representative. At least this has been my experience.
