Visiting "third world" countries these days is incredibly inspiring! The optimism you feel there is truly contagious. Over the past decade, hundreds of millions of people have risen out of poverty, and their resilience and hope are truly uplifting. It serves as a wonderful reminder that positive change is possible, even in challenging circumstances. It's a refreshing contrast to the sometimes dour mood we experience at home these days, reminding us of the strength and spirit of people around the world.
For those who like the simplicity of target date funds, I'd highly recommend Chris Pederson's book (from the Paul Merriman Foundation), Two Funds for life. The thesis is that a target date fund coupled with a small cap value fund delivers the benefits of both simplicity and a better return profile. Some more examples. That "entrepreneurial" cousin, your barber, the Uber driver taking you from SFO down to Silicon Valley who knows Vinod Khosla, and the so-very-bright Ivy League grad who spins a beautiful story so you willingly part with 1.125% of your net assets every year in "fees"!
It was quite heartwarming to read how you approached retirement. I've only worked all along, most of my friends are from work, and this is the biggest fear I have to overcome before life and circumstance force me into retirement.
