I suffered the same fate as Emily. Although heavily invested in Vanguard funds, I was incredibly disappointed in them for this move, and said so. Weren't they supposed to look out for individual investors, whether in retirement accounts or not? Also, I have subscribed to Morningstar for years and read their Personal Finance columns regularly. Saw Vanguard Target Date funds lauded over and over again, which is why I invested in them. Never saw any mention that these may be best held in retirement accounts, and have been saving in them well before ETF's became common. I discussed my concerns with Morningstar, and they now regularly publish articles on what types of investments are best held in taxable versus retirement accounts. Hopefully future savers can avoid my mistake.

When I was a younger worker just learning about investing, I bought stocks instead of index funds. I would have also paid greater attention to asset location between my pre-tax and taxable accounts.
