    • Part of Habitat for Humanity's process for helping people become homeowners is setting them up for success with 500 hours of "sweat equity" in the home they are building. Included in those hours are classes on the obvious things like how to do home repairs, but the whole process begins with working with an instructor/coach on the prerequisite skills of planning and goal setting. The question my local affiliate uses to illustrate this need: Q. What item can be found in every wealthy and middle class home but is much less likely to be found among those in poverty? It is not a costly item, in fact many business give them away for free. A. A calendar. The first step for many folk in breaking generational poverty is learning to set a goal, develop steps to achieve it and be willing to accept coaching and accountability to achieve it. One of the homeowners whose house I worked on related that one of her first steps towards owning that home was finally losing the 10 pounds she'd always talked about losing.
