Although there is the online form to fill out it still needs to be mailed or faxed in. I wanted to know my form was received and filled out correctly, hence all my attempts to get some answers.

They could reduce payouts for benefits above that amount.

Thanks for this thoughtful article. What I keep wondering is this: why isn't income over $160,200 taxed? Wouldn't that solve the problem easily? And perhaps help with the inequity of the less wealthy or less savvy paying more taxes proportionately?

In my case my Medicare premium doubled due to capital gains from 2 years ago. This year our income is much lower in order for my husband to get ACA medical coverage so the IRMAA penalty is definitely more than 1% of our current income. To reduce income I reverted to maxing out my deferred tax 403B for the next couple of years instead of my Roth option. I will resume Roth conversions hopefully when my husband reaches 65 and gets on medicare too. I have appealed the premium decision based on a life changing event but have had no response. IRMAA sounds and acts like a persnickety old Aunt!

It's sweet that your mother could stay in her home as long as possible with your help. It is a hard decision you all have to agree on but at least you alone are not responsible for it. In my case it was a homestead farm that has been in the family for almost 150 years. My bedroom was the same bedroom my father had growing up. My sister and I couldn't agree and I wasn't ready to let it go. Eventually I just kept some of the woods where we have a tree house and camp every year and the house and surrounding crop land were sold. I am not happy with the deterioration I see in the place but realize that I could NEVER improve the memories of my childhood and parents living there all their days so I honor that and let the current state of things evolve. Best to you!

I found your article inspiring, not only the pushing yourself to new limits and realizing we can do more than we think, but also the creative giving back part gives me some ideas!
