    • There are obviously some people who are in need. Other people will always take whatever they can get for free even if they do not need it. R Quinn, I am sure your observations are spot on.

    • Dave, is it possible to find a paid companion who could stay with him for a day or two or over a weekend so you and your wife can spend some important time together? Local churches/synagogues may have some people they can recommend. Neighbors may know of friends and relatives who may be interested in making some extra money. College students might be interested. There are plenty of good and trustworthy people out there. You just need to find one. You and your wife deserve this. Happy Holidays.

    • Dave, I love how you are able to connect with your son. You are truly a wonderful father. How lucky you both are to be able to share these times with one another. Your story made my day. Thanks for the gift.

    • It is easy for our emotional selves to get excited by what looks like good/great deals. We So WANT to believe we are getting a deal. This of course clouds our judgement. Of course, the scammer is trying to hook our "greedy" side. There is a reason anglers use shinny lures to catch fish. The fish finds out too late that they were scammed.

    • Boy, do I have a Wells Fargo story. I'll give you the short version. I opened a credit card w/ them. I received the credit card, made some purchases on the card, and paid the balance in full when it was due. A few months later they sent me a letter stating that they wanted permission to access my tax return with the IRS. They said they wanted to confirm my income. I made several calls to them and said I was not comfortable giving them access to my tax information through the IRS. I said you already gave me the credit card, I already made purchases on it, and have already made full payments to you for my purchases. I also told them to check my credit score; it is excellent, in the 800's. No good they said, we want to access your tax return through the IRS. I even went to the local branch and a banker there made several calls and could not speak to anyone w/ authority to help me. He got the run around, just like me. It seems there is someone in the subbasement at headquarters that makes the call and not even a Wells Fargo banker can talk w/ him or her. A few days later I got a letter in the mail telling me my credit card was cancelled by them. Needless to say, I stay as far away as I can from them. I don't care what type of deal they are offering. Some firms are best avoided, and Wells Fargo is at the top of the list.

    • In addition to the wonderful names already mentioned, I would like to add Jesse Livermore. He made and lost several fortunes over his lifetime in the stock market, He knew that he should not put all his money in the stock market, but he just could not help himself. Greed got the better of him. He would advise others to always have some money on the side that was safe. He, unfortunately, did not take his own advice. But we can learn from this great investor to have a diversified portfolio. In the end he took his own life because of the size of his financial loss. He taught us to not make the same mistake. Thank you Jesse for such a valuable lesson.

    • Thank you Dennis, and everyone else, for being so open about your finances and decisions. This is a wonderful place for us to learn from one another. There is tremendous power in sharing and being open. We all benefit greatly from our collective experience and judgement.
