I think you and Clark Howard are the most sensible, realistic, down-to-earth financial visionaries out there today. Thank you for your interesting and relatable life story, and your always useful and relevant investing advice. May your future be filled with family, good friends and enriching experiences.
My daughter works part time while in college and contributes $50/month automatically to a Roth IRA. I match her contribution, and will continue to do so until she graduates and is working full time and contributing to her employer’s retirement plan. My goal is to teach her the value of early and regular contributions and compounding.
It seems a lot of readers are a bit ruffled up by some of the comments on this post. I think the bottom line is that we all need to look out for our friends and loved ones…of any age…to keep each other safe from those who would do us harm.
I opened a Roth account for my daughter with Vanguard in a target retirement fund when she was 17. She contributes $50/month automatically from her bank account, and I match $50/month and will continue to do so until she is out of college and working full time. She currently is 22 and has over $7500 in her Roth account.
Great article with lots of valuable insights! I think the sticking point for some is that the word “privilege” has become yet another woke, progressive term with underlying negative, guilt-inducing connotations. I agree “fortunate” may be a better word choice.
