I am retired fourteen years from the Postal Service. I have eight months liquid cash in bank for emergencies. I have my Postal pension and also get full SS benefits under the FERS retirement system. I have no debt on credit cards. I have paid my car off five years ago. My TSP plan continues to grow as I keep 25% invested in stocks.. In fact , I earned back all my RMD's and then some this year. I am single now (divorced eight years ago) Health coverage is still funded primarily by the Postal retirement system and been in Medicare for a while. I still have a mortgage but it's small , did a re-fi at 3% . I will never be rich but I am in a good place and want for nothing. I aches and pains like most of us in our 70's but overall health is good. What can I say? I am blessed , truly.
Dennis... I could not echo your sentiments more at this time in my life. I want to remain mobile and my trips to the gym have helped me to maintain a decent weight and fluidity in my joints. I have friends that have had major things happen and lose their independence. It's scary as I am in the final quarter of my life. I hope that anyone reading your post will see that a careful diet and daily exercise will prolong your independent state. Best of luck and good health to you.
I have BCBS federal as you do and it's a godsend . One of the reasons I stayed in the postal service all those years. When my husband and I divorced he lost that coverage... not too smart was it? He also would have gotten half my pension had I become deceased before him and would have kept the benefit of the health coverage. I look at some things now like the gent Steve said above, not what I lost but what I have... and I think I am doing pretty well. Good luck to all and thanks to Marla for sharing her story. Most of us in some ways are a phoenix rising from the ashes. Your attitude is paramount in your success or failures.
